Opening

Make sure everyone is aware of events and opportunities happening at Connections listed in the bulletin: we have construction projects, youth programs and other opportunities to move forward in your faith!

If you didn’t get to it last week, have new registrants, or if the group has any questions, please review the “Connection Group Commitment.” Address any questions and go over childcare needs if applicable. This is a very vital part of the group experience. Finally, did you send around a snack sign-up list?

Discussion

We’ve covered some BIG material so far. Give the group time to catch up, or process. In particular, talk about two things:

If you want to get unstuck in your faith, it is within your power to do something. Perhaps the single best thing: start reading your bible! What are you reading? When and where? What help do you need? What resources? What advice can you share? Try to aim for 5 out of 7 days each week.
If you want to get unstuck in your finances, it’s going to take some work. Review our BIG three:

Budget: You got to be knowing where your money is going.
Get out of debt.
Commit your first fruits to God by working toward a tithe, or to radical generosity!

Now, on to Unstuck Families: Our commitment verse is Joshua 24:15

“...as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

Discuss what it means to serve the LORD as a household.

What does this mean, or how does this look, for dads, moms, children and extended families?

The best biblical advice to get unstuck as a family, or to move forward, is to engage in serving God together. With that in mind, the service ended with the following commitment:

Our Family will serve Jesus through...

~ Engaging faith at home;

~ Engaging faith with our church;

~ Engaging faith in our story.

How can we engage our faith at home?

Read Deuteronomy 6:1-9 and discuss this foundational passage.

Share some of your “best practices” as a family of faith at home...

How can we engage our families in faith at church?

Read Ephesians 6:1-4 and discuss the how the church can help parents in their role of building faith...

How can we engage our children in our own, and their own, story of faith? Read Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

If you have kids, talk about how you are training them, and let the group share what they see in your kids. If you don’t have kids, did your parents help to train you up in this way? If so, how?

Close with a time of prayer for one another.

If you have kids, consider how you can involve them in the Group. (Remember, if children are a part of the families in your Group, they are a part of your Group.) How can “Group night” become a time for them to see their parents serve, engage in meaningful community, and grow in love for God? We hope that these Groups will help raise a generation that sees faith being worked out, and lived out, by parents, in homes, in the community!

Discussion

Talking about money (spending, debt, giving, etc) can be very intimidating, and scary. Maybe someone in the group who is feeling stuck financially could share about their situation. Then, perhaps someone not feeling stuck can share about their money management.

Discuss the meaning of money. Try to rate yourself, giving each of the following four options a number, 1-4:

Status

I look up to people who are financially successful.
Having the best reflects well on me.
I want to maintain a lifestyle similar or above my peers.

Security

Having money in saving is very important to me.
I would rather have extra money in the bank than a new purchase.
I prefer safe investing over high risk investing.

Pleasure

I really enjoy shopping, and buying.
People who have more money have enjoy life more.
Money can’t buy happiness... who am I kidding, it can!

Control

The one who controls the account calls the shots.
I would not be comfortable putting all our money in a joint account.
I earned it, it’s my money.

It’s very interesting to read through the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) looking for themes. One theme to examine is the re-occurrence of money matters, and the many ways that people got themselves stuck. Consider the following:

A man stuck looking for status, Luke 19:1-10
A man stuck looking for security, Luke 18:18-25
A man stuck looking for pleasure, Luke 15:11-16
Jesus’ teaching on trying to use money for control, Luke 6:27-36

How does God see money?

Read 1 Timothy 6:17-19 and Matthew 6:19-24

Discuss this radical, counter-cultural understanding and use of money.

If you are ready to get out of debt, and know you need help, talk to your leader, or someone in the church. It probably took you a long time to get into debt, and it will take work to get out. Don’t try to go it alone!

Praying together is as important as studying the bible together in our groups. Both are ways that we affirm our faith is not just personal, but profoundly communal. Your leader will prayer, but you will be invited to participate if you are comfortable.

Opening

Feel free to spend the bulk of your first gathering meeting one another. To begin, play a “get to know you” game. Nothing too hard to start. Maybe talk about some New Years resolutions.

After introductions go over the “Connection Group Commitment.” Address any questions and go over childcare needs if applicable. This is a very vital part of the group experience. Give folks a week to think about their commitment.

Other things to consider:

Co-Leaders. Maybe there is a person/couple in the group who want to become group leaders themselves. Help them practice and get the skills they need to develop.
Maybe your group is already pretty big (over 12 adults). If so, perhaps you need to consider dividing into two smaller groups. That could open the doors for even more people to join a group, and more leaders to grow!
Perhaps your group is a little slim (less than 10). Prayerfully think about who you could invite to join your gathering.
It’s also a good pan to send around a snack sign-up. Maybe turn it into a friendly competition: best banana bread recipe?

Discussion

Take a look again at the Spiritual Continuum. Encourage one or two in the group, who are comfortable, to share where they are at, or where they have been “stuck.”

Some interesting results from the REVEAL survey:

Of church attenders, 10% are Exploring Christ, 38% are Growing in Christ, 27% are Close to Christ, and 25% are Christ-Centered.
92% of all respondents having been stuck at some point in their faith
26% report currently being stuck or dissatisfied
Being stuck can happen at any stage, but over 50% are in the “Growing in Christ” group
The longer one remains stuck, the more like one will become “Dissatisfied” with their faith and church
The #1 reason given for being stuck... “Too Busy.”

One thing emerged in the REVEAL study that really came as no surprise: personal engagement with the bible is the one practice that was influential in every stage of growth and served as a catalyst to getting people “unstuck” and moving forward in their faith.

In your own words now, explain what is the purpose of bible study, and what impact does it have on your life?
Discuss and apply v. 17 “wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” In your own words, what is salvation, and what does it mean to put your faith in Jesus?
Discuss the four applications of scripture: teaching, reproof, correction and training in righteousness.
Have you every had an experience where, because of your knowledge of the bible, you were “equipped” to do a good work, in your own life, or in someone else’s life?

Knowing that personal bible reading and reflection the most consistent factor in a growing and satisfying faith, we want to encourage and equip you to make this a part of your life! Share what you need, or how you will engage in the bible...

Winter 2012 Semester

“And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers... And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” ~ Acts 2:42, 47

Connection Groups target the second part of our mission, “to connect people.” In the Sunday worship service we gather to build into our relationship with God. In our home groups we gather to build into our relationships with one another. We hope that everyone who worships at Connections will be a part of a Connection Group.

It is through Connection Groups that each person can give and receive the best spiritual care. We find a place to belong and find acceptance. We can find opportunities to grow spiritually by digging deeper into the bible and prayer. We find a place to serve people and our community.

We know that when people are a part of a Connection Group, they truly feel a part of Connections Church!

Here’s how they work, generally:

Groups run on the semester format: Fall, Winter and Spring, 8-10 weeks each

Groups have a clear starting and stopping date so you know when to step in, and when to take a break
Groups are made up of about 12-16 adults + children
Groups typically meet for 1.5 hours each gathering
The standard curriculum is a bible study and discussion based around the Sunday worship service
Groups are built around three guiding values:

BELONG- Every meeting starts with a time of just “belonging” together- having a snack, and getting to know one another. The bible calls these kinds of relationships “fellowship”
GROW- This happens through a bible study based on the worship service and time to pray for one another and the church
SERVE- Groups are to take seriously the needs of one another and their neighbors

Groups are also encouraged to schedule some fun time together out side of the meeting, or to even plan a group project or event

Registration:

We have several established groups that have a few openings. Therefore, we may suggest that you try one of these groups if they meet in your area.
For most of our new registrants we will place you in a new group.
And if you get invited to join a group, and say yes, well that’s just fine! Your leader will let us know.

Prayer

Of course not everyone has to speak, but invite everyone to participate. The bible teaches us that it’s good to pray in worship, as individuals, and as groups. Pray big, and work your way down: world, others, our church, your lives.

For our church, please pray that God will bring about the means for us to have a home. So much is NOT happening with a faciity, and that’s a problem: our band practices in borrowed space, our youth have no place to call their own, our paper-product distribution ministry has been on hold for 6 months, people are asking about adding programs and events to bless our church and our community, but we are limited by not have facilities to cultivate our mission! It seems like the answer to this problem is going to have to come straight from God! Please share your ideas, and pray that God will open a door.

Digging In

Discuss the OCCUPY Prayer and talk about living it out...

Read Matthew 5:13-16.

Discuss what it means to be salt and light. Talk about examples of people who are living salty and shining lives.

How can you be a bit more salty? What areas of our world need the purity and flavor you can bring?
How can your shine in dark places in our community and our world?

We looked at 3 ways that Christians and the church can change the world. Discuss each of these:

Prayer. Read 1 Timothy 2:1-2

What is prayer? Why do we pray? How do we pray? What do we pray for?

Share any stories of how prayer has changed you, or how your prayers have been answered. Encourage one another to get serious about prayer. Prayer is essential to both discover faith, and grow in faith with Jesus.

Truth. Read John 14:1-7

This is an awesome passage where Jesus declares he is the truth. What does it mean if Jesus really is the truth, the way, the life? If he is truth, what does that imply about our world,our lives, and basically everything? What if Jesus isn’t the truth, or only part truth? How world that change our faith, or destroy our faith?

Together. Read Ephesians 4:1-6

Simply discuss the power of solidarity. How have you seen the power of living by example? How have you seen the power of people together?

Digging In

First, discuss the OCCUPY movement: what is is about, what are your questions, why do you think it’s gaining momentum for now? Just have a conversation about the movement so we’re all better informed.

The church has has many different responses and stances towards culture and cultural movements.

What is a helpful definition/understanding of culture?
What are some different ways the church has created, responded and influenced culture?
What do you make of the position mentioned, Christ Transforming Culture?
Read Romans 12:1-2 and discuss.

What does it mean, “This is the fast that I choose...”
Do you think wickedness exists in the world? How do we know what is wicked and wrong?
Who are the oppressed, and who or what is oppressing them?

What does it mean when it says, “do not hide yourself from your own flesh?” v. 7
Is there a correlation between obeying what it taught in this passage and hearing God answer when you call? Read v. 9

Could that be said of ourselves? Our church?

Option for opening discussion: Connections Ministry Centre.

In the past five months we’ve seen a lot happen on this front- after the building was destroyed we entered into a long negotiation with our insurance company. We were able to recover the costs of our materials. However, we could never put a value on all the volunteer time and energy that so many gave.

Since settling, our Leadership Team has been actively praying and seeking God’s will for the next season of Connections. Our mission continues, but our plan to live it out has been in discussion. In the midst of these prayers we have pursued several avenues to see what would turn up. We talked with several churches about renting office space and using their facilities for programming. We’ve looked at several office leases. We’ve looked at several warehouses for doing another renovation project. In summary: no great partnership has emerged, and nothing has been within our budget or “felt right.”

We invite our groups to pray for our church and discuss possible plans for moving forward with our mission. Those of us in leadership do feel it’s time to find facilities to have a presence in our community, and space for our church to grow through more programming.

What kind of facilities would you like to see our church find? In what ways could this advance our mission in our city?

Digging Deeper: Read Colossians 3:1-14

Last week we learned some simple bible reading study tools. It’s really about reading the text intentionally and asking the basic “When, who, what, why?” questions.

Only after we have established what the bible actually says can we ask the more personal, “What now/what about me?” questions.

Use these questions to go over the text and make sure we’re all learning to become bible-readers for ourselves. Here’s some help:

1-4: How can we be of good to God and our neighbours if we set our minds on “things above?”

Would you say that Jesus Christ “is your life?” Or is he more just a part of your life?

Discuss what this kind of faith looks like.

5-11: How have you struggled with these “earthly” things: sexual immorality, anger issues, lust for power, ungodly talk?

How much of your old self do you still wrestle with?

What does it mean to call these things of earth “idolatries?”

Are you feeling growth in becoming your new-self in Christ?

What does v. 11 mean? Is this about identity, salvation, a future hope?

12-14 How can we put on each of these virtues: compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience? Does one stand out as something you need to pray for and apply?

What is the significance of forgiveness in the text and in the life of the Christian?

How has forgiveness changed you and your relationships with other people?

How can we “put on love?” Give some practical examples for daily life, and for different areas of life- works, family, friendship...

We have several upcoming events for Connections- youth events, breakfasts, etc- make sure everyone is aware.

We also have many ministry areas where we’d like Connections to grow. Take some time to go over some of the key volunteer roles as outlined on the Connection Card. Some areas where we are always looking to grow is in our Family Ministry, especially those who can teach. Other key areas right now are running the media program and the camera during worship. Talk to use if you have some skill in these areas, or are willing to learn.

Now, open your time of study/discussion with a fun question: If you could have one super power, what would it be, and why?

Digging Deeper

Read Matthew 9:1-13

Take as long as you need as a group to pour over the text. Let these stories really soak in and speak for themselves. Perhaps your group leader will set up the bible reading by sharing some background and context to the text.

Some helpful questions to ask and talk about as a group:

Where does this happen in the life/ministry of Jesus?
What people or groups are present?
What’s the problem being addressed in the passage?
What’s the solution being presented?
What do we learn about who Jesus is?
What do we learn about what Jesus does?
What do we learn about who we (people) are?
What we we learn about what people do?
How do the different people in the stories respond/react to Jesus?
How do you respond/react to Jesus in light of this passage?

Here are some other questions you can ask of this passage:

What impresses me more: the forgiveness of sins, or the physical healing of the paralytic?

What do you make of this simple invitation of Jesus, “Follow me.” What would it look like for you to follow Jesus?

Is anything holding you back from moving forward with Him?

Discuss the radical acceptance/affirmation behind this “follow me” invitation.

Jesus declares that he has come for the sick, not the righteous. Does that totally shatter your perceptions of the church and being a Christian?

How can our church or your group become more like a “hospital for the sick” rather than a “museum for the righteous?” What can we “sick” people learn about living a mask-free life from groups such as AA?

Closing Thought: As soon as we say we are sick, Jesus works to make us well!

Close with a time of prayer for one another, our church and our world! Encourage one another to follow Jesus this week!

“Naked, and Not Ashamed!”

Opening

Everyone get naked! Just kidding... really.

It’s Thanksgiving. You can’t have too much thankfulness in your hearts and in your group. Start by sharing 3 things you are thankful for. But no repeats! If someone says they are thankful for their family, then you can’t repeat that. It might get harder as you go along, so don’t hesitate to be the first to share!

Digging Deeper

Read the creation story, Genesis 1:26-2:2, 2:15-25, 3:8-13

Any reading of the bible, and perhaps especially the creation story, can raise a lot of questions. Thus any bible study of this section can easily get side-tracked, and can go on just about forever!

So let’s focus on some the things we know are answered:

The first “mask” in the bible is this mask of shame. How would you define shame? How have you experienced shame ? (Yes these are very personal questions, so not everyone has to answer.)
Have you struggled with shame, or have you experienced some victory over shame in your life? Perhaps your story can be an encouragement to others in the group.
In your own words, discuss what it means to be made in the image of God: How are we like the rest of creation? How are we unlike the rest of creation? How can this both humble, and inspire us?
How can we better become icons to reflect and direct the reality of God in the world? Who do you know that lives as a icons for God, rather than making an idol of themselves?
What is unique about our role in creation as stewards? How can understanding this role help with our understanding of our lives and our purpose in the world?
What is unique about our relationship with God?
What is the relationship like between Adam and Eve?
What would it be like to be naked and have no shame, no fear?
What are the wonderful things we can affirm about our image? What are the fallen things?

Group Exercise:

Read these passages where God shares how He sees us without any mask out loud as a group:

Psalm 139:16-19, Isaiah 43:1, Jeremiah 31:3, Zephaniah 3:17, John 15:12-17, 1 Peter 2:9.

Reflect on these passages and what they say of us.

Close with a time of prayer.

No everyone has to pray, but everyone should participate in the prayer time. Give folks a chance to share, have a time for open prayer, then your group leader can wrap it up!

Introduce anyone new to the group and share how you came to check out the Connection Group.

After introductions go over the “Connection Group Commitment.” You’ll want members to commit to the semester at this meeting. ANd now that you know who will be with the group, you can make a snack schedule, or even begin making plans for a service or social event.

Digging DeeperThe theme of this series is all about taking off our masks and showing our real identity. But let’s start with something a little less threatening. What was you favorite costume as a kid, or who/what did you always want to be? How does this reflect who you are today: your hopes or aspirations?

It’s probably a little pre-mature to share our deepest, darkest secrets. But perhaps a few folks could share about a mask they used to wear. Maybe it was a season in your youth, or in a relationship. You were trying to be something, or someone, you really were not. How’d that work out for you?

All of us have some masks. In fact, it’s wise not to show everything about ourselves to everyone all the time. But all of us could benefit from getting real with God, and finding people with whom we can show our real self, flaws and faults included.

So let’s look at confession, and it’s role in the bible.
Read Psalm 51, perhaps the most famous “confession” in all the bible. Share the background to this Psalm- the story of David and Bathsheba, 2 Samuel 11 and 12.

If God’s love is unfailing, why does David still ask for mercy?
Why do you think he uses the imagery of washing away sin?
Why does he say he’s sinned against God alone? What about Uriah? Bathsheba? All the people of his kingdom? What does this tell us about the nature of sin?
Where does David understand his sinful actions to originate? (Look at verses 5-6)

Feel free to go through this whole Psalm, discussing each statement, to see if it rings true in your own life and experience.

Confession comes from the greek, “homologeo,” or, “To say the same.” Let’s talk about what God says about you:

First, what amazing things does God say about you? Have the group share as many encouraging verses or truths from the bible about who we are as humans. Can you start to say these same things about yourself?

Second, what are some of the more revealing things God could say about you? Are you willing to hear some truth about your life, even if it’s uncomfortable? What would stop us from wanting to say of the things about our lives that God already sees and knows?

Close with a time of prayer.No everyone has to pray, but everyone should participate in the prayer time. Give folks a chance to share, have a time for open prayer, then your group leader can wrap it up!

Give folks a week to think about their commitment. Then next week, have participants sign the Commitment if they plan to stick with the group.

Discussion
If you have time get into a bible study and discussion.
Read Matthew 3:13-17 and Romans 6:1-4.

If someone has a great baptism story, and they are willing to share it, that would be awesome!

Maybe you have not been baptized. If so, and if you have any questions about it, maybe you could ask the group, and hear what they think/believe.

Maybe you know it’s time for you to be baptized. Share what God has done in your life that has brought you to this step of faith. Maybe you were baptized as an infant. Would it be meaningful for you as an adult to now affirm the baptismal vows for yourself?

(At Connections we believe that it’s biblically faithful to baptize babies and pray for their adult affirmation of faith; AND we think it’s awesome when adults want to publicly affirm their faith through the re-affirmation of the baptismal covenant. Basically, we take a broad position on this matter, so that it might not be divisive in the church. No baptism, infant or adult, is what saves us. We are saved only by grace through faith in Jesus!)

Connection Groups, Fall 2011

Groups start the week of September 25,

and run through November 27 (10 weeks)

Here’s how they work, generally:

Groups run on the semester format: Fall, Winter and Spring, 8-10 weeks each

Groups have a clear starting and stopping date so you know when to step in, and when to take a break
Groups are made up of about 12-16 adults + children
Groups typically meet for 1.5 hours each gathering
The standard curriculum is a bible study and discussion based around the Sunday worship service
Groups are built around three guiding values:

BELONG- Every meeting starts with a time of just “belonging” together- having a snack, and getting to know one another. The bible calls these kinds of relationships “fellowship”
GROW- This happens through a bible study based on the worship service and time to pray for one another and the church
SERVE- Groups are to take seriously the needs of one another and their neighbors

Groups are also encouraged to schedule some fun time together out side of the meeting, or to even plan a group project or event

Registration:

We have several established groups that have a few openings. Therefore, we may suggest that you try one of these groups if they meet in your area.
For most of our new registrants we will place you in a new group.
And if you get invited to join a group, and say yes, well that’s just fine! Your leader will let us know.

This series will explore biblical teachings on weaving God into all aspects of our relationships. Last week we started at the beginning: how do we get into a Christ-centered, God-honoring relationship? This week we get into the meaning of marriage in the bible.

Ask those who have been married the longest tell the story of how they meet, fell in love, and got married.

Read Genesis 1:27-28, 2:18-25

What does the creation story teach us about marriage?
What is the purpose and meaning of marriage?

The church calls marriage a “covenant.” The formula for “cutting” a covenant was as follows:

First, the covenant is initiated by the greater of the two parties. Usually between a king, and other.
Second, the history between the two parties was stated.
Third, the party in power sets the terms of the covenant.
Fourth, the two parties take their vows.
Fifth, blessings and curses from keeping or breaking the covenant are stated.
Finally, the covenant is sealed, most often with the sacrifice of animals. This is why it making a covenant was called “Cutting a covenant.”

Read Genesis 15 and look for all six movements.

Review these movements found in most wedding ceremonies:

First, the processional and “invocation.”
Second, the declaration on the purpose of marriage: That God has given us marriage that two maybe become one, that families are formed, that we have a living example of Christ’s love for us, and for us to love, in our spouse.
Third, the preaching of the Word.
Fourth, the vows are exchanged and a symbol of the covenant given, traditionally rings.
Fifth, the marriage blessing.
Finally, the kiss, introduction of couple, and recessional.

Discussion:

How can an understanding of covenants help us to understand marriage?
What help or advice can your group give to those who are single?
What help can your group give to newly weds?
What help can be given to those with children?
What help can be given to those widowed or newly single?
Is there hope for marriage in our culture, or is this a religious relic of the past.
Is marriage a “creational institution” that will withstand the tests of time and culture?

It’s Valentine’s weekend. Maybe a few folks can share a fond memory of the holiday.

Learn It

This series will explore biblical teachings on weaving God into all aspects of our relationships. Today we start at the beginning: how do we get into a Christ-centered, God-honoring relationship?
Have a couple or two share about how they “found” each other, fell in love, and got married.

1 Corinthians 7 is a massive chapter dealing with marriage.
If your group leaders desire, read the passage and pick it apart. There is a ton of information, and controversial stuff- just warning you!

One key verse is, “... those who marry will have worldly troubles, and I would spare you that.” 1 Corinthians 7:28

Would you agree or disagree with this, and why?

Discuss the “Five Core Compatibilities”:

1. Spiritual Compatibility (2 Corinthians 6:14)

Did you have this kind of compatibility with with your spouse? Were you at a very different place in your relationship with God when you were first married?
If you are currently dating or engaged, have you talked about this? If not, how can you bring this into the relationship?
If there is not “Spiritual Compatibility,” are you willing to make changes and deal with this discrepancy?

2. Communication Compatibility. (Ephesians 5:31-33)

How is your communication? Rate it on a scale from “horrible to great.”
If you have great communication skills share with the group how that has grown, and why is it so important.
How do you handle conflict and arguments? Seek wisdom from the bible and the group as you process this together.
Check out Ephesians 4:25-32 for more good direction.

3. Character Compatibility. (1 Peter 1:13-15)

You have to talk about character issues as you see them in your spouse/partner. This is not easy. How have approached this sensitive and critical issue in the past?
What would you instinctively say are the most important character issues for the survival of any relationship? List, and discuss.

4. Value Compatibility. (2 Corinthians 7:1)

Do you know what you value, and how you want to live life? Have you talked about this with your partner?
What would a map of your values look like, as an individual, and as a couple?

5. Sexual Compatibility. (1 Corinthians 7:4-5)

We’ll look more closely at sexuality and the Christian world view in 3 weeks. The bible affirms that God invented sex and has a plan for sex: It is part of a marriage covenant, for mutual fulfillment and making babies.
If your group still has time you can discuss the role and importance of physical attraction and sexual fulfillment in marriage.

Question: Have you ever had an experience that you could only explain as “a God thing?” A moment, a feeling, a dream, a camp experience as a kid, something that your knew had to be God and rocked your world?

Learn It
Read Isaiah 6.
Discuss Part 1: God Rocks (v. 1-4)

Do you come to worship expecting an encounter with the living God? Can you think of other bible stories where God appeared and the earth shook?
What is the significance of the Seraphim? Why are they covering their eyes and feet? What else do you make of this appearance of God in the temple?
What does holiness mean, and why is it so celebrated by the Seraphim? Why is it repeated 3 times?
Have you experienced the glory (the weight) of God in your life? What does it mean, or how would you explain it to someone?

Part 2: God Rocks Your World (v. 5-7)

Why does Isaiah see himself as lost and unclean? Why his lips? Why is he part of an people of unclean lips?
What happens immediately after Isaiah’s confession, and why is this so important?
What does the hot coal mean or symbolize for Isaiah and for us? Where else do we see fire in the bible?
Have you had an experience of feeling the overwhelming glory of God, which lead to an overwhelming feeling of guilt? What happened, and what was it like?

Part 3: You and God Rock His World Together (v. 8-13)

Why does Isaiah now hear the voice of the Lord calling? What has changed in him?
What is Isaiah’s response? What does it mean to present yourself is such a way?
Read over the commission of Isaiah.
What is he going to do?
What is going to happen?
How will things change, or not change?
Is this going to be an easy, or impossible mission?
What hope is there in the end?

Live It

How does this passage point us to Jesus Christ? How does he rocks, rock our world, and invite us to rock the world with him?
Has God moved from being a concept to a reality for you?
Have you had a conversion experience where your life has been so thoroughly changed? Do you want such an experience of God? Do you have reservations about such a radical conversion to Jesus?
If you have heard the call, and said, “Here am I, send me.” What have you said yes to, or, where have you been sent?

Remember: we are more sinful than we ever imagined, but more loved than we ever dreamed.

Learn It
Read Acts 2:42-47 to put our series in context. Notice verse 42,
“And the devoted themselves... to the prayers.”

Share about your “prayer plan,” or any prayer stories from your life. Perhaps an answered prayer, an ongoing prayer, or a prayer that didn’t seem answered at all. If you’re not really into prayer, feel free to share why, or ask any questions you have to the group.

The early church immediately adopted the the Jewish prayer pattern. While there were many different “schools” and traditions, almost all revolved around three times of prayer (morning, afternoon and evening), starting with an affirmation of faith (Shema), and followed by various passages of scripture, both said and sung.

Deuteronomy 6:4-6, “The Shema,”
4 "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. 5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.

Does this kind of rigorous prayer plan seem attractive? Oppressive? Too ritualistic? Share your thoughts or ideas on this kind of prayer...

Jesus’ disciples asked him to teach them to pray, just as John (the Baptizer) did. It was customary for a rabbi to teach his students a unique prayer. It was sort of like a mission statement.

Luke 11:1-4, “The Lord’s Prayer”

Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, "Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples." And he said to them, "When you pray, say:

"Father, hallowed be your name...
Your kingdom come...
Give us each day our daily bread...
and forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us...
And lead us not into temptation."

Now go back through and discuss what each line is says,
what it means,
and how it can apply to your life.

Live It
The challenge here is obvious- would you commit to such a rigorous plan of prayer? What tools would help?

Consider the following:

Choose a time and place for each prayer (morning, afternoon and evening)
Begin each prayer time with the Shema and the Lord’s Prayer.
For your morning session try a bible reading plan or devotional, such as the ones we gave out and suggested last Sunday.
For your afternoon session read the corresponding chapter in Proverbs according to the day of the month (24th chapter on January 24th).
For your evening session write out your prayers and the specific things/people you are praying for.

(This is flexible. If you’re a morning person and have time, you may want to do your prayer journaling then.)

Feel free to spend the bulk of your first gathering welcoming new comers and catching up. To begin, you could put people into pairs, give them a moment to talk, then take turns introducing the other person to the group. After introductions go over the “Connection Group Commitment.” Address any questions and go over childcare needs if applicable. Send around a snack sign up and contact information sheet too.

Digging In

Review the notes from the message and discuss any questions with your leader and one another. Do you agree that it is impossible to grow as a Christian with out personally reading/studying the bible? Why or why not?
If you have never been a bible reader feel free to ask the group questions about bible reading and study.
If you are a bible reader, share some of your thoughts and best practices in bible reading.

If you are consistently in worship and in a small group you’re literally 2/3 of the way to becoming a student of the bible! All you need to do now is commit to a personal plan and routine to study the bible.

Answer the following:

Do you have a bible?
Do you have a bible reading plan?
For families, do you have a family devotional plan?
Do you have a time and place set aside for bible reading?
Do you have a plan to create accountability for yourself- with your small group, writing in a journal, posting progress on a social network or blog?

Connection Group Commitment
Connection Groups target the second part of our mission- to connect with people. We believe that being in relationships in the body of Christ is an essential part of every Christ-followers life. In the days of the early Church the first Christ followers gathered the first day of the week (Sunday) for worship. In addition, they meet throughout the week in homes (Acts 2:46; Romans 16:5; 1 Corinthians 16:19; Colossians 4:15). We believe that being a part of a Connection Group is not something we do in addition to “going to church,” it is essential to “be the church.” Why? Because relationships matter- with God and with other people in “the body of Christ.”

We gather around the following principles:
Common Purpose: To become more Christ-like in all areas of life. CG’s do this by creating an environment to...
    BELONG- 1 Peter 2: 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
    GROW- Colossians 1: 28 We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
    SERVE- 1 Peter 4:10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.

Common Place: To become more a part of our neighborhood, intentionally knowing and being available one another and our neighbors.

Common Possessions: To become more generous in supporting one another spiritually, emotionally, socially and physically.

Therefore,

We agree to meet for the duration of this semester.
We will try to make every meeting, or let our facilitator know we will be absent.
We will discuss the topic/text of worship services or our focus group.
We will make worshiping at Connections a priority and actively participate in these discussions.

Share a life changing conversation you’ve had, preferably a good change. How did it happen, and how did your life change as a result?

Read Matthew 16:13-16.
Who do you say that Jesus was and is?

Romans 10: 9 “...because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Have you ever had “the talk” with God? If so, how and when? What changed in your life as a result?

3 things that give us assurance:
1. Led by the Holy Spirit

We have a lot of reasons to be stressed out, pessimistic and full of fear. Where would you rate yourself on the “Full of Fear/ Full of Peace” scale? Can someone describe what it’s like to be full of peace when going through hard times? Read John 14:27 if you need assurance of peace.

3. God is “Abba Father”
Do you want to know God as Father? Do you know God as Father? Discuss what it means to have this kind of relational connection with God.

Considering these things, would you say you have the assurance of your salvation?

If not, would you like to have more assurance? What can you do, according to the bible passages we’ve looked at, to have more assurance?

If you’ve never been baptized, or made a public affirmation of faith, how could that help?

Take time to go over the church announcements and events.

The last week of the Fall Semester is December 12. Plan an end of the year Christmas Party!
Winter Session will run from January 16 through March 6, 2011.
Spring Session will run from March 27 through May 22, 2011.
All participants are encourage to re-register with their current group or a group that works for your schedule.

Opening
Ask one or more from the group to share a story of their suffering. What was the source of suffering? How did you handle the suffering? What has the suffering changed in you?

Learn It:
Discuss how many set-up God for a fall with this choice:
God is all good, but not all powerful.
God is all powerful, but not all good.

Does rejecting God eliminate or alleviate our suffering? How, or how not?

Read 1 Peter 4:12-19
Discuss a “Third Way,” as taught in the bible:
God is all good, and all powerful, and we need to understand the reason and role of suffering in the world, while we hold onto the hope of a time when all suffering will be redeemed.

While not all suffering can be explained, we can know the reason why we suffer in the present world. Discuss:

We make bad decisions.
Others make bad decisions.
We live in a broken world.

Discuss this statement from the sermon:
“The bible teaches that God is not the cause of suffering, restrains most suffering, but allows some suffering in our lives for his plans.”

Discuss our Hope in Suffering: Past, Present, Future
God suffers more than we ever could or will by taking our sin to the cross;
by Holy Spirit He stands with us in our present suffering;
in the future all suffering will be redeemed in the resurrection.

Live It:
While few would celebrate or want to relive any serious suffering they have endured, most will say they would not give up the experience (yes, there are many exceptions in extreme cases of suffering and evil). Because of the way suffering shapes and changes us, it is hard to image life with the experience/wisdom gained.
What lessons have you learned from suffering?
Could you say that God allowed the suffering to come into your life for His glory and your good?

Conclusion:
“Christians are like nails- the harder you hit them, the deeper they go.”
When you suffer, how can you go deeper?

Pray for each other.

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

Take time to go over the church announcements and events.

Opening
Connections Community Church, as one part of the larger Protestant church tradition, upholds two sacraments: Baptism and Communion. As “sacraments” we believe these to be sacred traditions, revealed to the church through the Scriptures, taught by Jesus Christ, and administered in the church.   While Jesus taught and commanded his followers many things, this much is clear- baptism and communion are to be practiced by the church. Each sacrament serves as a “sign” and “seal” of an individual as a part of the visible church. Each carries with it unique spiritual blessings in the life of the believer and the church.

In Baptism the believer and children of believers become participants in the life and ministry of the church. In the Lord’s Supper, believers and their households are nourished in grace and faith.

Discussion:
What do you believe regarding the sacraments?
Did you grow up in a church that affirmed them, rejected them, or even had more of them (the Catholic Church has 7!)
What does it mean to be, or to make, “sacred”? To be set apart and made pure.
How do the sacraments work?
When they are part of God’s work in us to make us holy and treasured persons, and people.

Baptism:
Connections affirms baptism as the most biblical and faithful public expression of new life in Jesus and participation in the church. When an adult comes to faith in Jesus and desires to be a part of the church they should seek to be baptized in public worship at the earliest possible convenience. Connections also affirms the longest standing tradition in the Christian churches of infant baptism. Baptism is the sign Christ gave us to symbolize the forgiveness and cleansing He accomplishes in the lives of the people who trust and follow Him. Baptism embodies many layers of meaning: laying down our life, dying to our “old” self, rising in Jesus, washed clean and pure, renewed and ready to follow Jesus the rest of our life.

Discuss the following:
Believer’s baptism- adults who profess repentance and faith in Jesus as Lord, either after a time of preparation, or in immediate response to repentance and belief. (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 8:36-40)
Infant baptism- claiming the promise of faith for a household and the children of Christ-followers. (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 2:38-41)
Children’s dedication- As Jesus blessed the children that were brought to him, so we will bless or “dedicate” all children of believers who in good conscious can not embrace infant baptism. (Matthew 19:13-15)
Re-affirmation of the baptismal vows- for all persons who were baptized as infants, or as adults, who wish to publicly profess their faith in Jesus, we will re-affirm the baptismal vows. This reaffirmation should proceed only after prayerful consideration and in the understand this is not a “re-baptism,” for we believe in “One Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” (Ephesians 4:5-6)

Communion, or, The Lord’s Supper
The Lord's Supper was directly instituted by Jesus Christ as a continuing practice for the church during this era before the return of Jesus Christ and the consummation of the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:19-20 and 1 Corinthians 11:23-25). This has been the universal understanding and practice of Christian churches.

As a Sacrament, the Supper is a sign and seal of the covenant of grace. It is a means by which true believers may spiritually grow and be nourished when received in faith and in the way God has specified in his covenant promises. By partaking of the elements we come into union with Christ as a united covenant people. For this reason it is often called Communion.

Discuss the following:
Paul carefully instructed the church at Corinth about the right reception of the Lord's Supper in 1 Corinthians 11. Christians are encouraged to participate, persons who do not openly confess Jesus as savior and Lord should not partake.

Discuss the three things that the sacraments work in our lives:
1. The sacraments invite us to participate with our lives (a sign and a seal).
2. The sacraments invite us into a “sacramental worldview.”
3. The sacraments work because of the sacrificial work of God.

The sacraments are meant to unify and empower Christians and the church. In closing be sure to reaffirm the fact that Baptism and Communion are not things to divide over. We can have different views on the details, if we are in agreement that we are saved only by God’s grace.

What images, ideas, or memories come to mind when you think about “the church?”

Discuss the definition used for the church: “The people called by God the Father; who gather together as one, holy, catholic and apostolic body under the Lordship of Jesus Christ to be built up and equipped; so they may be sent out in the power of the Holy Spirit, in obedience to the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20), to fulfill the Great Commandment (Matt. 22:37-39).

Learn It
The word “church” comes from “ecclesia” which derives from two words, “to be called out” and “to assemble.” Compare that with some of these bible terms: the body of Christ, the people of God, the family of God, the Elect in Christ, the bride of Christ, the gathering of the redeemed, the communion of saints, the New Israel and the People of the New Covenant.

Which one(s) best expresses how you normally think of the church? How can your understand of the church grow through these other titles?

Learn It: Read Exodus 20:1-6
Martin Luther said that we only break the other commandments after we have broken the first two. Meaning, if we worship only God, and have no “idols,” we keep all the commandments. But if we put anything before the worship of we will violate our most fundamental command.

Why is it hard, or not appealing, to try and put God first in everything?
Discuss what “idols” in our world are most tempting for you?

Coming to God’s word is an act of worship. So, after a time of welcome, we encourage you to spend some time in prayer or in singing to start your bible study. Create and atmosphere of praise to start your study on grace.

Learn It
Gordon MacDonald wrote: “You need not be a Christian to build houses, feed the hungry, or heal the sick. There is only one thing the world cannot do. It cannot offer grace.” Discuss this proposition and the primacy of grace in Christian faith.

Read Ephesians 2:1-10
This passages teaches that we are saved by God’s grace. What does it means to be dead in our sins? Why does the bible teach that we need to be saved? What does is mean to be saved? Do you think most people agree that we need saved? What role does God’s love play in His grace and our lives?

Perhaps the most popular acronym to define it is ”God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.” Does this help capture what is taught in this passage? What are some of God’s riches? What is the expense that Christ Jesus had to pay for us?

Live it
Do you have any personal stories of experiencing God’s grace? If so, please share as much as you are comfortable.

Do you have any favorite bible stories that have helped you understand and embrace God’s grace? If so, please share.

In the message we talked about the difference between you trying to work for God’s grace, and letting God’s grace work for you. Look at the following lists. Examine your life, and assess where you are at in these contrasting positions. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself on both sides. Use this exercise to help you let God work his grace deeper into your heart:

The bible teaches that we are sinners saved by the grace of God. But also, we are made saints by the grace of God, alive in Christ and filled with the Holy Spirit. Discuss how holding to the truth of this revelation- we are both sinner and saint- can help us rely more on God’s grace.

Remember: we are saved by grace, and we live by grace! Grace is our regeneration, justification, sanctification and glorification! It’s all about God’s grace!

Week 1: “How Religion Works”

Opening
Review the Connection Group Commitment for any new comers. Give attention to the primary purpose of our Groups: “A place to Belong, Grow and Serve.” Make sure folks understand the expectations for the group, and from group participants.

Learn It
Have a few folks share a time when they felt like an outsider.

How did that make you feel, and what could they have done to make you feel welcomed?

Read Acts 15:1-11, 19-21.
Verses 1-11 of Acts 15 describes an early disagreement among the early church about whether or not Gentiles should be allowed to into the church. Some of the church leaders viewed them as outsiders and should be treated as such. In verses 11 and 19, Peter stands up and declares that the church should not exclude the Gentiles and the church “should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.” (v.19)

Describe a time when you felt like an outsider at a church. How did that experience affect your attitude towards the church?
Why do you think it is easy for churches to forget that church is for everyone not just for “church people”?

One of the primary reasons we make others feel like outsiders is because we are too comfortable in our current surroundings. We must get out of our comfort zone. Share a time when you jumped out of your comfort zone to do something God was leading you to do.

How did your stepping out of your comfort zone help you grow as a person and in your faith?
What changes in our mindset can each of us make Connections be more welcoming?
What are some of the ways Connections successfully creates an environment that is welcoming?
Who would you like to see find a place in our church? What would it take for them to be comfortable at church? Ask someone to join you and pray for them.

Live It
Next Sunday take some steps in helping make our worship service more inviting. Here are a few suggestions of things you can do:

Don’t rush out of the church after your worship experience. Spend some time in the lobby visiting with those you do not know and especially those who are visitors.
Before, during and after your worship experience, keep an eye out for someone who looks lost or could use some help. Step out of your comfort zone and do what you can to assist them.
Consider serving in an area of ministry that is instrumental in creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone, like our children’s ministry or greeting.

Each of us can do our part to insure that our church does not make anyone who walks through the doors feel like an outsider. Pray and ask God to help you jump out of your comfort zone and step up your efforts in making your church a welcoming place for everyone. And, keep the conversation going this week with your family, group and online on our Facebook Fan Page.

Opening
Feel free to spend the bulk of your first gathering meeting one another. To begin, you could put people into pairs, give them a moment to talk, then take turns introducing the other person to the group. After introductions go over the “Connection Group Commitment.” Address any questions and go over childcare needs if applicable. Send around a snack sign up too!

Digging In
If you have time get right into our series, “In The Hood.” How has your faith grown or been challenged this month?

Week 1: Are you living your faith the other 167 hours of the week? How, or how not? Are you on board with the Great
Commandment (Mark 12:29-3) and the Great Commission, (Matthew 28:18-20)?

Week 2: Read Romans 12:3-21. Have you been living in “Pseudo Community” with anyone? Did you work to create any “Sincere Community” by venturing down “the Tunnel of Chaos?” Have you worked to practice hospitality?
Did you share with the saints in need?
These are the marks of genuine faith. They are not optional for the Christ-follower. How can you grown in these areas?

Week 3: Discuss the video and let us know what you thought. Would you be interested in more video teaching at Connections?

Week 4: Read Hebrews 10:19-25. Review the three spiritual blessings that we have in Jesus:
v. 22, “Let us draw near…
v. 23, Let us hold fast…
v. 24-25, “Let us stir one another to love and good works…”
One concrete way to apply this passage is to continue meeting together. So what you are doing in your Group is practicing biblically faith! How can your group be an encouragement to one another to love and do good works?

Closing
Prayer is to be an essential part of the Group experience. We encourage your group to keep a Prayer Journal to share requests and celebrate answers! Your group leader will pray for you, but everyone is welcome to participate!

Questions to consider as we go “Into the Hood”

Are you trying to live out your faith 168 hours of the week? How, or why not?
How can you improve in living out the Great Commandment? In what areas are you not showing love for God, neighbor and/or self?
Does the Great Commission define the mission of your life?
Does the vision of Connections (Connecting with God...People... the World) make sense and make you want to be involved in each essential area of our ministry (worship, home groups and volunteering)?
How can our church get from here (worship) to there (the hood) better than we are right now? Or, how can our church get from here (the way things are) to there (the way want them to be)?
Do you personally feel awake, equipped and fully nourished, as enacted in the Lord’s Supper? If not, what needs to happen in your life this Fall?

Summer Vacation 2010

Connection Groups run on a semester format: Fall, Winter and Spring.
Our Groups break from "formal" meetings for July and August.

If you are interested in joining a group we'll be starting up again in September 2010.
Until then we do have many "informal" gatherings, events and Volunteer Teams that run all year long.

So join us in worship at the Silver City Movie Theatre 10am every Sunday, and speak with one of our leaders.

From what Jesus says, hell is very real and something to be avoided at all costs. So, why is it difficult for many of us to talk about hell?

Read Mark 12: 28
One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"
29"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."

(You can also read this story in Matthew 22:34-40, and for an added twist read Luke 10:25-37.)

A few years back a saying was made popular in the church- “What Would Jesus Do?”
One of the things we can be sure that Jesus DID was to recite the “Shema” (Hebrew for “hear”) every morning and evening, as this was the custom of all Jews.

Read the Shema in Deuteronomy 6:1-9.
What does the introduction (v. 1-3) teach us? Why is this material important? Discuss what it means to teach, to fear and to obey these commands.

How does the second part (v. 4-9) add to our understanding? How literally do you think we should take these instructions?

Read Leviticus 19:18.
This is the other quote from Jesus. Taken together, Jesus says this two-fold command captures the whole of the law/commands.

Let’s start with setting our reference point: what is love? How do we experience, understand, and share love? (Don’t feel the need to come up with a definition, as this is a discussion.)

First, What does it mean, or what difference would it make, for you to start loving yourself as God loves you? How might you view yourself differently? How would you treat yourself differently? What changes can you make to better love yourself, as God loves you?

Second, now apply all this to your neighbors. First, who are your neighbors? What are their names? How can you actually love them? (Again- discussion, and sharing stories, is the most helpful way to grasp and apply this command.)

Third, now about loving God. How have you experienced the love of God? How do you express your love for God with your heart, soul, mind and strength? How can you better show your love for God with all your being?

Scott McKnight calls this “The Jesus Creed” and commends the discipline of reciting this “creed’ at the beginning and end of every day, and as many times in between as we are reminded. Pray for one another to live the Jesus Creed.

Read Matthew 4:18-22.
Discuss the three points made about this passage in the message:

First, one must hear the invitation of Jesus to follow. Discuss what it means to follow Jesus. Are you willing to make the first step and simply follow Jesus?
(Perhaps a few people in the group can share their story of answering the invitation to follow- what was it like to start following Jesus? What changes occurred in your life? Was it all good, or difficult to get started? Don’t be surprised if your stories are all very different.)

Second, following Jesus always means leaving something behind. Discuss what you left behind to follow Jesus, or what Jesus is asking you to leave behind to follow him more closely?

Third, Jesus gives only one incentive to follow him- the promise that he will make his followers “fishers of men.” What does it mean to be a fisher of men/women? Do you even want to become a fisher- why or why not? What does it look like to make a catch?

REACH
One very real way we can apply this passage to our lives is to begin seeing ourselves as fishers of men and women. In this exercise you will actually map out your “fishing pond.” Draw your street and the houses around your home. Fill in as many names of households as you can.

Your job, as a “fisher,” is to fill in the blanks by getting to know your neighbors, finding ways to care for them, and looking for opportunities to share God’s love with them. Commit to pray for and reach out to your neighbors.

Begin tonight with a time of prayer. Invite anyone who is comfortable join in and say a prayer.

Tonight will be a little different. Instead of a straightforward “bible study” we’ll be do a “creed study.” To begin, share if you have any familiarity with the creed, or if this to totally new. Either way, we are starting with the basics tonight. If someone in your group is knowledgeable about the creed, feel free to give a little background lesson.

The Apostle’s Creed, from the Book of Common Prayer
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.

(* “catholic” does not refer to the denomination, Catholic, but to the “universal” or “Christian” church.)

While the creed is not in the bible, is has been used by Christians since roughly the late second century. The version used here is what was settled upon about the year 750. This basic form of the Creed is embraced by Orthodox, Catholic and most Protestant churches.

• Do you find think the antiquity of the creed makes it all the more acceptable, or irrelevant?
• What are some of the possible benefits, and possible problems, of using the Creed?
• In your own words share how the creed might help to DEFINE your belief…

There is too much in the Creed to do a bible study of each and every proposition. But, if there is time, you can discuss any points which you find particularly helpful, or particularly troublesome in the Creed.

The challenge in the worship service was to embrace Martin Luther’s advice and repeat the Creed 8 times every day. Will you take the challenge?

Open tonight with a game of some sort. Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary- something that gets everyone involved. It is a good way for people to get used to talking and sharing in a group setting.

Optional Fun question: If you had to live alone for a year in a cabin in the woods, what would you spend your time doing?

If someone can lead in singing, and if the group desires, open with a song or two. Take time at the start of the meeting to go over the church announcements and upcoming events. Don’t forget to plan a fun event, and maybe a service event for your group. Please talk about the importance of Connection Cards for our ministry.

YOU 2.0: Spiritual Suffering

After everyone has had a chance to grab a snack or drink, briefly review the purpose of our Groups using the “Group Commitment.” Are there any questions? Did you make plans yet for a “play time?” May we suggest a Superbowl party or an evening of ice-skating at Victoria Park? Start a sign up sheet for sharing snacks and contact information.

At this time your facilitators we go over our church announcements and explain the purpose of our Connection Cards. You may be surprised to find out why it is so important that our regulars fill out a Card every week!

GROW
If anyone in the group has the gift of leading worship, and if the group wants to, we encourage you to start this time with a song or two. This can be the perfect way to bless the group and grow someone’s gift.

After an opening prayer jump right into our discussion with this conversation: Please share, to the degree that you are comfortable, a time in your life when you “crashed” or experienced great suffering. This could be an experience in your past, or something you are currently navigating. Would you go so far as to call this experience, “A dark night of the soul?”

Review some of the different kinds ways we might suffer:
Through disobedience, bad choices, the choices of others, or just the pain of a broken world. Have you experienced suffering in any or all of these ways?

Read 1 Peter 4: 12-16
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 14If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.

Now talk about suffering as part of God’s plan for your life.

Do you feel you’ve ever suffered for being a Christian?
How has God has used your suffering for your own growth?
How has God used your suffering as a ministry to others?
How might God use your suffering if you are still in the midst of the pain?

Can you really rejoice as you suffer? If someone is in the midst of suffering be very sensitive to their needs, and what God is doing in their life. This is an emotional topic. Do not feel the need to bring closure to the questions raised in this study. Invite God to meet you in your suffering, and to use that suffering for the saving of many lives (Genesis 50:20).

For further study: read Romans 5:1-11; review of the life of Joseph, Genesis 37-50; or review on the experience of Job.

Pray for one another and how you or your group might reach out to those who suffer.

The majority of your first meeting of the winter semester will be spent getting to know what Connection Groups are all about, and all about each other! Your facilitators will walk you through our three major movements of each gathering:

Following some time introducing one another, you will review the Connection Group Commitment (attached below on the blog). This will clarify what you can expect from your group, and what the group can expect from you.

If this takes the whole meeting, that’s fine. Just make sure to take time at the end to pray with one another, makes arrangements for childcare, start a “snack sign-up,” and make plans for a group “social” and a group “service” event.

The following is designed to as a group exercise in order for you to receive counsel on your life plan. It would be most beneficial for you to come to your group having written out a draft of your plan.

Opening:
Read Proverbs 19:21 (in your program).
If someone in your group seems particularly gifted in organizing their life, and others lives, have them share some of their life plans, how they discerned their plans, and how they have implemented their life plans.

Review our three guiding proverbs as found in the program this morning: 15:22, 16:3 and 16:9.
Discuss the importance of counsel, determination and openness to God’s changes to your plans.

I. Discover God’s PURPOSE for your life:
Exercise- write your own epitaph. Thinking now of what is most glorifying to God, what do you want said of you by your family, friends, church and community? What do you want God to say about your life as well?
One other way to help us understand ourselves is to reflect on your SHAPE (Spiritual gifts, Heart, Abilities, Personality, Experiences).

II. Discern your LIFE PLAN:
How do you want to develop in the following most important areas of life? (You may add to this list, but you cannot take away):

III. Activate your MISSION:
Now you must get practical, put your plan into a statement, verse, list or paragraph that you can remember. Then put it into action steps in the following areas:

Mid-range Plans: 2-10 years
Short-range Plans: 1-2 years
Daily/Weekly/Season: this is your SYSTEM to write and implement your plans. Remember the importance of putting your plans into a workable weekly practice so that you can do your work and get your Sabbath.

Take time to play an opening game this week! Something to get people interacting- charades, pictionary, something silly.

Digging Deeper
The passage we are really getting into requires context. Read the “doxology” (doxa= glory, logos= word) in Rm 11:33-36. Review the attributes of God described. Reflect on these things. Then share your own “doxology” or “words of glory” to God.How does this set the stage for what is about to come?

What Paul is about to ask falls in light of the doxology, and in light of God’s mercy? What is God’s mercy? Share from you own knowledge and experience.

Read Romans 12:1-2. The first thing we do in light of God’s mercy is to offer our bodies. Practically, how do we do this?
Why is this so important? What does this tell us about how God views our physical bodies? What does this mean for the value of other peoples bodies and physical needs?

Paul creates an amazing juxtaposition: the offering of our bodies as living sacrifices as our spiritual act of worship, as compared with offering animals as dead sacrifices in temple worship. Spend some time working through the implications of this- how does this mean for how we worship and “do” religion?

The word for spiritual is from the Greek “logikos.” How should this radically change the way many of us view “spiritual” things? What does it mean to say we are spiritual people in light of this passage? What does this imply about our priority on worship?

Another great juxtaposition appears between being conformed and transformed. Describe the pattern of this world and how we are conformed. Compare this to the transformation of the mind in Christ. Get practical- how have we become too conformed? Where do we need be transformed? How can we apply our minds to this endeavor?

So what comes first, belief of behavior? Do we offer our bodies to change our minds, or change our minds to offer our bodies? Or are we creating a false dichotomy here? Are we better served seeing ourselves in a more holistic way? Explore the implications of this passage and your own experience. Share your own interaction of mind and body, and how they have affected the other.

Closing
The passage ends with an amazing promise- do this and be able to test and approve God’s will. Do you want to do God’s will? What do you believe is God’s will for your life?
Pray, share announcements, and make a plan for a group games night.

Have you ever felt like you were in the presence of real evil? Not just something or someone bad, but something, dare we say, demonic? If so, please share with the group what that was like, how you felt, what you did.

Digging Deeper
The passage we are going to look at seems appropriate in the Halloween season. Jesus unveils a dark spiritual reality in the world, one that we might not want to look into or even acknowledge. But for Jesus, it was very real.
Read Luke 8:26-39

Do you believe in a literal heaven, and hell? Angels, and demons? Why or why not or what questions do you have? How does the biblical narrative demand the existence of these “supernatural” realities?
Further study/reading on the origin and nature of Satan see Isaiah 14:12-23, Job 1, 1 Chr. 21:1, Eph. 6:10-12

Let’s walk through the story:
• What seems to be the nature of demonic possession, as compared to oppression, or temptation, as we see in Matthew 4:1-11?

The demons (Legion) acknowledge and seem helpless simply in the presence of Jesus.

Considering this, who then should be afraid of Satan/demons, and why?
Who has no need to fear Satan/demons, and why?
Why does Jesus honor Legions request?
How is their fate symbolic in the Jewish context?
What is the result for this man?

How is Legion a metaphor for many lives today?
Do you think many people in our community struggle with actual demons, or the demons of their own creation?

Considering now the close of this story, what wouldn’t you give to be found clothed, cleaned, and in your right mind?
How can Jesus do this for all of us?
How can we go to our respective homes and tell how much God has done for us?

Closing
This story brings up many controversial and complicated questions. Take time to address any burning questions. Then give assurance that all who commit their lives to Jesus are promised protection from evil and the security of heaven.

Unveiled Sin: October 18, 2009

Maybe a few folks from the group could share a story of being “busted.” Maybe it was a humorous experience, something you can laugh about now; or maybe it was humiliating, but God used it for great things in your life.

Digging Deeper
Read John 8:1-11 and take few minutes to review the story:
• Why does the whole set-up seem so suspicious?
• Why are the religious leaders so against Jesus at this point? (Why would they say Jesus needed to be stopped?)
• Why do you think Jesus seems to ignore their question at first?
• Why do think the older ones left first?
• How does Jesus demonstrate a “tough love” to this woman?

Now let’s get a little more personal.
• Share with the group if you ever felt set-up like the woman.
• Share if you’ve ever felt set up like Jesus was, in a catch-22.
• Share if you’ve ever been so angry that you were the one setting someone up for a fall.

Have you been holding onto any stones of hatred, jealousy, or revenge?
Have you ever felt like you life was saved from the brink of death?
Would you say you feel condemned by people or God, or have you experienced the forgiveness of sin that this woman experienced?

Have you left a life of sin, or is there a sin now that you must leave? Can you ask the group for prayer, support and encouragement to walk this new path?

We got a jump on Thanksgiving last week by working to raise our “G.P.A” (Gratitude Projection Average). We offered 3 practical steps. Discuss how you did in each area:

Beginning, and ending, each day with thanks? See Psalm 92:1-2
Turning griping into gratitude? I Thessalonians 5:18
Write a “Thank You” note to God? Psalm 103:2

Share stories about the blessing of becoming a more thankful person.

Digging Deeper: Read John 4:1-42
This passage has two main characters, and 2 main points: Jesus, and the woman.

First the woman: Share your thought on this woman. What do we learn about our own thirst from her?
What are the deepest human thirsts?
How have we succeeded in quenching them?
How have we failed?

Now Jesus: How does Jesus encounter the woman? What does this teach us about our availability to God, and to people?
Discuss Jesus’ use of acceptance, and confrontation. How does he blend the two?
What can we learn about our own witnessing from his example?
Where should we be sensitive?
Where should we be bold?
What can we offer, and how should we offer it?

Before we can offer what Jesus offers, we must first understand our own thirst, and receive Jesus’ initiation. Have you received the gift of living water offered by Jesus? Or do you still feel thirsty in life?

Reflection: What material or earthy possession is most important to you? Maybe it’s your money, your home or hometown. Maybe it’s more abstract, like your career. It’s the thing, more than anything else, that you would hate to give up, let go or lose.

Digging Deeper:
Read Mark 10: 17-22
In the belief system of the original audience, what does being Jewish, male, young, wealthy and influential say about a person? How is this the model of the “blessed’ life? In our own day, what is typically associated with the blessings
of God? Where do cultural and scriptural definitions of blessing meet? Where do they diverge?

Is the question, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” a burning question in your life? Why, or why not? Do you agree with George’s observation that it is usually busy middle-aged folks who ignore this question?

Jesus points the man to the commandments. How do you view the commandments: are they a “to-do” list that gets you into heaven? A fence that keeps you safe and in line? A mirror that reflects your shortcomings? Something else? What is the connection between eternal life and the commands?

John 17:3. “Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.” What does that even mean? How is eternal life akin to knowing God through Jesus Christ?

The man is adamant that he has kept the commands. Yet the question of eternal life still weights on him. What does Jesus tell him to do? What do you think the other disciples thought about this? How does this fit your answer to the question, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?”
What does Jesus’ answer reveal about this man’s heart?

Now, being as honest as we can with ourselves, what might Jesus tell us to sell, give up or change if we are to experience eternal life, i.e., knowing God and Jesus Christ whom he has sent? In other words, who or what stands between you and Jesus? What can you do about it?

If you have 10 more minutes: Read Mark 10:23-31 and discuss verse 27.

Reflection: Have you ever had an experience where you got more than you expected? Or, maybe you’ve had that more common experience, you didn’t get what you wanted, but you got what needed. Share a few stories.

Now get into the text- read Mark 2:1-12.

Digging Deeper:
Have you ever hoped for a miraculous healing, for yourself or for someone else? What specifically did you want God to do? Did it happen? If so, how.
If not, what did that do to you r faith? What happened to you or the person for whom you wanted healing?

In the story the friends have great faith in Jesus, and were willing to go to an extreme to bring their friend to him. To what lengths have we gone to bring a friend to Jesus?

When Jesus says, “Your sins are forgiven,” we know how the teachers felt, but what about the man, his friends, the crowd? What do you think they were thinking?

Let’s get into this issue of sin. What is sin? Is the forgiveness of our sins really the harder thing? Is it really our greatest need? Really work this one over in the group.

Now let’s get into the issue of our sin. Do we feel we need forgiven? Have you accepted the forgiveness Jesus offers?

Now let’s directly compare our lives. How has Jesus meet a felt need in your life that confirms his power to meet your deepest need of forgiveness?

If you had to compare yourself to one of these people/groups, who would it be and why- the paralytic, his friends, the crowd, or the teachers of the law? Have you always been in this group, or has your view changed recently?

Closing:
What are your felt needs right now? Share as much as you are comfortable, so that this group may take your need to Jesus in prayer with you.

Connection Group Commitment

Connection Groups target the second part of our mission- to connect with people. We believe that being in relationships in the body of Christ is an essential part of every Christ-followers life. In the days of the early Church the first Christ followers gathered the first day of the week (Sunday) for worship. In addition, they meet throughout the week in homes (Acts 2:46; Romans 16:5; 1 Corinthians 16:19; Colossians 4:15). We believe that being a part of a Connection Group is not something we do in addition to “going to church,” it is essential to “be the church.” Why? Because relationships matter- with God and with other people in “the body of Christ.”

We gather around the following principles:

Common Purpose: To become more Christ-like in all areas of life. CG’s do this by creating an environment to...
BELONG- 1 Peter 2: 9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
GROW- Colossians 1: 28 We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
SERVE- 1 Peter 4:10 Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms.

Common Place: To become more a part of our neighborhood, intentionally knowing and being available one another and our neighbors.

Common Possessions: To become more generous in supporting one another spiritually, emotionally, socially and physically.

Thinking now on where you want your life to end up, are you able to articulate a vision for your life?

The clearer you can be, the better. But if this just helps you to start thinking about this and articulating a few thoughts, fine.

It’s one thing to say the vision. How would you explain or articulate the vision of Connections? How does it serve as our vision, our mission, and a model of doing ministry?

CONNECTION GROUP QUESTIONS
April 5, 2009

The following readings will walk you through “Palm Sunday,“ the Sunday before Easter, the day Jesus entered Jerusalem. Jesus and his followers came to the city to celebrate the Passover and the week long Feast of Unleavened Bread. These events commemorated Israel’s liberation from Egypt, when God “passed over” homes marked by the blood of a lamb. The religious leaders knew that Jesus, a rabbi, would be in Jerusalem and conspired to have him killed.

Anticipation
Read Matthew 21: 1-11
Anticipation is different than having expectations. Try to get past your pre-existing expectations for how and where God will work in this time and this coming week. Just anticipate drawing deeper into a relationship with God through Jesus. Anticipate a richer understanding of your salvation that will deepen your relationship with God, your sense of peace and security in the work of Christ, and your awareness of the presence of the Holy Spirit. Anticipate an amazing Holy Week and Easter celebration.

“Hosanna” was a Hebrew expression that meant, “Save us!” It became an expression of praise. As you begin this time of prayer, start with praise. Praise God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Now, more specifically, pray over those areas in which you need saved. As the crowd shouted, “Save us,” call to Jesus, “Save me.” Get specific, save my life, my children, my marriage, my job, save my...

Preparation
Read Matthew 21:12-17
In a fit of righteous anger Jesus drove the hucksters and shysters from the temple. What in you should elicit some righteous anger from Jesus? What does he want to drive out from you? After all, we are taught that
our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. He wants us to be better at being ourselves!

This is your time of confession. Air your sins. Clear out the dirty laundry. Confession is good for the soul! How have you gone against God? What needs turned over and removed from your life? Have faith that wherever Jesus turns you over and cleans you out, he is also going to set you right and fill you up.

Jesus goes on to teach that his Father’s house will be a house of prayer. Drawing the connection, we should be people of prayer. Read again the simple praise of the sick and the children, v. 14-15. How are you sick? Where do you need healed? Pray about it. Then spend some time in that child-like praise. Keep it simple, honest, real. Just praise him as you might want to be praised by a child.

Supplication
Read Matthew 21:18-22
Now here’s the hard part. Let’s stretch our faith in prayer. Don’t get too wrapped up in studying this passage. Let it inspire your heart-felt prayers. Pray like you can move mountains! Pray it like you really believe it! Make this the bulk of your prayer time. Here are some suggested areas to pray over in Supplication:
• Your own relationship with God to grow deeper and closer this coming week.
• Blessing and healing for your spouse, children, and other loved ones.
• Salvation for family and friends who don’t know Jesus as their Lord.
• Blessing and growth at Connections Community Church.
• The needs of our neighbors- hurting marriages, broken families, unemployment, sickness, mental illness, AIDS in Africa, etc.
• Pray for local leaders right up through to world leaders.
• Pray for the end to war- focus on the Israel, Afghanistan and Iraq. Pray for peace.

Adoration
Read Matthew 26:6-13
Think of a time when you were adored. How did it make you feel? How did you respond? What can you offer to God in adoration? What have you been holding back? What would unabashed, unashamed, unrestrained adoration of Jesus look like for you? How can you give Him your all, your best? As your prayer time come to a close, just bask in adoration of Jesus.

Very often things will come out of prayer- a call you have to make; someone to forgive; a conviction about giving or serving.

CONNECTION GROUP QUESTIONS

Opening:
Your five + minutes for announcements at the start of your meeting are INVALUABLE to keep people informed and involved. Tell them what’s coming up, recruit new volunteers, and involve them in serving within your group.

We’d actually like you to do things a bit differently at this meeting. One of the reasons we love groups meeting in homes is that this provides a natural connection to our neighborhoods.

Our hope is that our Connection Groups become our primary source for community outreach and service. Let’s talk about this tonight.

Digging Deeper:
Take a few minutes and brainstorm some outreach ideas for Easter-
* Is there a project you can take on?
* A family you can help?
* An agency you can volunteer with?

Give the following challenge: Whom can you invite to Connections this Easter?

What will it take to get your neighbor, a co-worker, a friend to church this Easter? Maybe all they need is a heart felt invitation? Maybe bringing them a meal would show them you really do care?

Easter is a natural season for reaching out to our community. If you get folks to Connections April 5 and 12 you can promise them an amazing service. We’ll also be handing out gifts to everyone who joins us. Not only that, but every new visitor who gives us their contact information also receives a gift card in the mail. So be assured- when you invite folks to Connections, we will go out of our way to show them our appreciation and love.

Closing:
Ask everyone in the group to think about who that person(s) will be. Share names and pray for them by name. Tell them you'll be asking for updates at in the coming weeks.

Good for Her

Opening:
Let’s start with the assurance that His grace is enough. This subject may have brought up painful, shameful, difficult memories and emotions. Take time to discuss and process this as a group of loving and gracious people.

Digging Deeper:
Let’s jump right into Song of Solomon. Read the background to this book of poetry and them jump into chapters 1 and 2.

We are approaching this thematically. What emerges is the love story of a couple. From the perspective of asking, “What’s good for her?” we see many lessons emerge.

How is does he engage in WORD PLAY? Does this mean we all have to be poets? Women, help the husbands and young men to understand what good word play means. How can words build up or tear down a woman? Just how important are words to you?

How does he engage in CHORE PLAY? All right, he was a king and probably didn’t help out too much around the colonnade. But he does take an interest in the details. How can we help out with chores around the home, and help us to understand why this is so important to your sexual well-being.

Finally, we do see a lot of FOREPLAY in these poems. They had it bad for each other. Take this as an opportunity to discuss how a woman thinks about (or doesn’t think about) sex. Is there truth to sayings such as, “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.” Feel free to discuss the questions your group raises. Focus on making it “good for her.”

Remember, keep bringing this back to biblical and experiential truths. Next week we’ll be getting into texts such as Ephesians 5, but feel free to go there now.

Good For Him

The whole point of this is to get men and women talking about what is good in our relationships. So don’t split up! Single men and women and couples need to talk about this stuff. So here we go…

Digging Deeper:
Read Genesis 2:23-25
First, this is the most common trajectory for people- venture out, find a spouse, have kids. But, it’s not always the case. We will, however, focus on this trajectory. Discuss if necessary.

98% of men say they are visual. 25% of women say they are visual.
What do we mean by this?
Do you agree that men seem to be created as visual beings, and that this is even normal and good?
How has the visual tendency of men turned toward destructive and sinful things?
How can we turn this created norm toward good and glorifying things?

Let’s focus on the man-
Job 31:1 I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully upon a woman.

The break in the cup of men makes us long for visual arousal that can and often does lead to very harmful practices.
How can we make and live this kind of covenant? Share, discuss, debate.

Now the woman-
1 Timothy 2:9 I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety…

Discuss/debate how we can put this into practice.
Do you agree that it is a good thing for wives to be visually stimulating for their husbands?
What about the encouragement to “take care of yourselves?”
Why does this seem to matter so much to men?
Can this be mutually edifying?

Closing:
Can we get back to the place where we can be naked and without shame?

Message: It's not good to be alone...

Opening:
Have you ever experienced a profound loneliness? Not just a lonely moment, but a season of feeling deeply alone? What was that like, or what do you image that is like? Why do you think solitary confinement is so feared?

Digging Deeper:
We were made for relationships- a common theme here at Connections.
Read Genesis 1:26-31. Discuss the implications, and ramifications, of being God’s image bearers. What does this say about our purpose, our design, our relationships in/to the world?

Read Genesis 2:1-22. After the general account of creation God reveals more about his image-bearers, men and women. What is unique in our creation? How does this expand what began in chapter 1? What is the role of the man? What is the relationship between man and God?

Why is it not good to be alone? What are some GREAT ways that we seek relationship?
What are some NOT GREAT ways that we’ve sought connection?

Why must we seek what is different, yet “like” us? What is the balance between “like” and “different?”

Reflect on the creation of the woman. DON’T get in verses 23-25- we’re saving that for later!

Closing:
This isn’t about marriage- this is about seeking GOOD relationships with fellow image bearers. How can we pursue greater connection and deeper relationships with our fellow image bearers? Discuss and pray.

He's Just That Into You, pt. 2

Opening:
Last week we had a discussion about our experiences of feeling loved (and unloved). We looked at several passages that assured us that God loves us. This week we want to find out what difference knowing and embracing God’s love can make in our lives. Ask yourself in this discussion, “Do I really believe in the promise of John 3:16?”

Digging Deeper:
John 3:16 can be broken down into four simple movements:

God loves…
God gave…
We believe…
We live…

Discuss each- how did God show his love? Use examples from the Old Testament, New Testament, and your life.

What did God give? What did it really cost? Why was there such a high price to pay? This part of the conversation should focus on the “atoning sacrifice” of Jesus. Why a sacrifice? Why Jesus? Why did if have to happen this way?
Read 1 John 4:7-12. How dies this help us to understand the effects of sin and the sacrifice of Christ.

What does belief actually look like? Where do trust and faith fit in? Does this make it all seem too easy for us? Why is belief so important to God?

What does eternal life mean? Really, examine the implications of God’s promise of eternal life.

Closing:
Ask yourselves, “What do I really make of this promise? Is there eternal life in Jesus, and if so, what does that mean for our present life in Jesus?” And of course, pray for one another.

Digging Deeper:
Some find it hard to believe that God is love. Others find it had to believe they are lovable. Where do you fall? What experiences have shaped your beliefs in this regard?

Read Psalm 139:1-16.
Does this frighten you, or thrill you?
Do you want to be this close to God, or would you prefer a more distant relationship?
What does this tell us about God?
What does this teach us about ourselves?
What does it mean to be fearfully and wonderfully made?
What does it mean that God has ordained all the days for you?

Read Zephaniah 3:17.
The heart of this series is try to grasp, or even experience, this biblical teaching- God is really THAT into you. He is with you, loves you, delights in you, and saves you, he even sings over you.
Have you longed for this love? Have you experienced this kind of love?
What do you long to hear from God? What is the song He is singing over you?

Closing:
Encourage each other with some “whispers.” What do you want to tell each other? Spend this time in prayer with God and with one another, sharing some of those things we long to hear; we need to hear.

Soul Revolution: REVEAL

Opening:
Take time to welcome any new comers. Perhaps you’ll need to look over the Connection Group Commitment again- review the hopes and expectations for these groups. Perhaps mix things up a bit this week- take the first part of your gathering to pray for one another. Share joys and concerns and invite everyone to participate.

Digging Deeper:
Read the story of the “Road to Emmaus,” Luke 24:13-35. The two disciples (about how many disciples were there at this time?) were talking about “all that had happened.” Review what had happened in the days preceding and read v.19-24.

Jesus changes gears and begins “revealing” to them the scriptures. Some have said that v. 27 is the most frustrating verse in the bible! Imagine what that conversation may have covered and share your thoughts or even bible passages.

Starting in v. 30 we find a “communion-like” scenario. Why do you think Jesus reveals himself at this time and in this way?

Verse 32 has become descriptive for many who come to faith. Dive into this- have you ever had a “burning heart” experience while in worship, reading the bible, in prayer, in a conversation? Feel free to go deep here! This is the crux of the soul revolution!

Read John 8:31. This one verse gives us simple and clear guidance for the Christian life. Review some of the teachings of Jesus that have directed your life. Expect, and enjoy, the variety of responses within your group. Feel free to go deep and use up your time here.

Closing:
This wraps up the “Soul Revolution” series. We have talked more about an internal change of heart, rather than any outward practices or disciplines. What has God been doing inside of you? Pray for each other if you have not already done so.

LUKE 24:13-35
13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles^[a] from Jerusalem. 14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them; 16but they were kept from recognizing him.

Opening:
Take time to welcome any new comers. Perhaps you’ll need to look over the Connection Group Commitment again- review the hopes and expectations for these groups. You may want to formally commit to being an active participant in the group for the semester.

Digging Deeper:
Last week you probably had to breeze over the bible story, so go back and review John 15:1-8. Share what God has been doing in your life- some clear-cutting and burning away, some pruning, or
bearing some amazing fruit! It may only be the second week, but take a chance and be real.

Pick up the story in verses 9-17. Let’s focus on our REPONSE and the fruit that God wants to nurture through our lives. This passage teaches us that God chose us. What do you make of this promise? Is it a comfort, or troubling? Do you feel chosen? Do you believe God has “appointed you to bear fruit?” If so, what is that fruit? What do you think God chose you for- what does he want you to do? What fruit might come through your life?

If you have time, discuss the experience of Communion in the worship service. Was this anyone’s first time participating in this? Did anyone in the group feel they could not participate? Discuss what this “sacrament” means. How does this provide us a real way to respond to Jesus’ invitation?

Closing:
We value relationships and praying for one another in these groups. Our passage teaches us “The Father (God) will give you whatever you ask in my name (Jesus).” (15:16) In a way that feels comfortable for the group, share your questions about prayer, and your prayer requests. Pray for the group members, or even invite group members to pray for one another.

Group Commitment
Connection Groups target the second part of our mission- to connect with people. We believe that being in relationships, in the body of Christ, is an essential part of every Christ-followers life.

In the days of the early Church the first Christ followers gathered the first day of the week (Sunday) for worship. In addition, they meet throughout the week in homes (Acts 2:46; Romans 16:5; 1 Corinthians 16:19; Colossians 4:15). We believe that being a part of a Connection Group is not something we do in addition to “going to church,” it is essential to “be the church.” Why? Because relationships matter- with God and with other people in “the body of Christ.”

We gather around the following values:
Common Purpose: To become more Christ-like in everything.
Common Place: To become more a part of our neighborhood.
Common Possessions: To become more generous in supporting one another spiritually, emotionally, socially and physically.

Therefore,

• We agree to meet for the duration of this semester.
• We will try to make every Group meeting.
• We will discuss the topic/text of worship services or our focus group.
• We will make worshiping at Connections a priority for our own growth, and to actively participate in these discussions.
• We will support our facilitators and hosts and respect their roles.
• We will be respecters of persons.
• We will practice confidentiality.
• We will seek to deepen relationships within the group.
• We will play together.
• We will serve together.

• Have you been in a season of “clear-cutting” in your soul? Where is God trying to bring new life?
• How has God been pruning you this season? What needs cultivated, or what needs to go?

Gift Ideas For Relational Giving

Here are a few ideas to get your own creative juices flowing.

The gift of time –
Create a fun certificate stating the gift of time you want to give, for example, help with a project around the house or help with errands. Bring coffee, tea of lunch and flowers when you come, be intentional about really connecting while you’re together!

Here are some ideas for spending time together:
• Wrap popcorn, gourmet root-beer and a classic DVD for a movie night with a friend
• Host a Hockey Night in Canada party and make homemade pizza
• Wrap 2 copies of a used classic book to read with a friend
• Bundle up, grab a hot chocolate and take a walk through the Christmas lights in Victoria Park with friends or family

Give creative coupons:
• Babysitting for a worn out sister-in-law, sibling or neighbour
• Yard work for an elderly person in you life
• Massage for that person who has been working a bit too hard lately
• Road trip to go on an out-of-town adventure with your child
• Car maintenance to change the oil in a friend’s car (if you know now)
• House project to help build a shed, clean the garage, closets etc.

Give a certificate for a day together doing something that person is passionate about:
• A new bat and a trip to the batting cages
• A new guitar strap and trip to the guitar center to play guitars together
• A day trip with your cameras for the photographer friend
• A day hike together, you bring the lunch

Things to make with the kids:
• Simple scrapbook with pictures of time with the person you’re giving it to
• A home “published” story, written and illustrated by the kids, the time you spend with the kids creating it is priceless
• A DVD of your life these days for long distance friends and family

Ask yourself: “What can I DO?” And give of yourself!
“What do they like to do?” Make time to do it with them.

A side note:
This isn’t about creating a bunch of new rules to be legalistic about for Christmas. It’s ok to spend some money (in fact sometimes creating something cool can be much more expensive – so be aware of that) don’t create a whole separate set of pressures, worry and guilt by feeling like you can’t spend a dime. Just step out of the consumerism, be thoughtful and enjoy the celebration!

RISK: Playing to Win

Opening:
What is the riskiest thing you’ve ever done? It could be anything- jumping out of a plane, or joining a Connection Group! Share with each other some of your greatest, riskiest, adventures!

Digging Deeper
The bible is stuffed full of stories about God calling people to take a risk, and people responding. You can first share some of your favorite bible stories of risk. Or jump right into this story…

Read Luke 5:1-11
Put this story into context. What has happened leading up to this? Review what brings Jesus and these fishermen to this point.

After reviewing the story, discuss the implications of what unfolds: what would have happened if Simon didn’t throw down his net? Why is he frightened after the miraculous catch? What does it mean that he left everything? What does it mean to really follow Jesus now?

Now, what does this all imply for our lives? Have you ever missed an opportunity to take a risk for God? Have you ever tried to put off obeying God? Is Jesus asking you to obey him now?

What would “throwing down your net” mean for you? How can you obey Jesus in a simple and obvious way? How might that begin to change your life?

Looking to the theme of risk- do you desire a life of comfort and safety, or a life of risk? Do the two ever cross paths? What is actually riskier- following Jesus, or following your own will?

What does Jesus mean when he tells all the disciples in Matthew 10:39, “Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.”?

Closing:
Challenge one another to he risky wonderful life of following Jesus. What is one risk you can take tonight? What is a risk you can take this week? Pray about it, and pray for one another.
