Opening
What did you want to be as a kid growing up?

Learn It
Read Psalm 8
What does this psalm teach us about God?
What does this psalm teach us about ourselves?

How do we simultaneously hold the truths of ‘we are dust’ and ‘we are created and loved by God’ at the same time? Why is it hard to believe both?

If you believed one of these truths without believing the other, what kind of errors could it lead to?

The General Call

Briefly review what this is. Matt 16:24-26

The Immediate Call

Why is this one easy to ignore? Why is it important to remember?

The Specific Call
Read 1 Cor. 12:14-20

Live It
Have you ever felt tempted to want a different gift set?

What is the difference between a job and a vocation? (Vocation = who I am, Job = what I do right now)

Do you know your vocation or have a sense of what it might be?

Have you ever felt like your vocation was not as good/holy/useful as someone else’s?

(if you have older people) How has retirement affected your understanding of job and vocation?

Do you wrestle against a desire for wealth, fame, power? Which is hardest to resist as you pursue your calling?

Do you find it difficult to be fully present in where you are now? Why or why not?

Is there anything specific job/experience you want to try in an effort to discern your vocation?

The God Talk

Series: "We need to talk"
Connection Group Questions
November 28, 2010
“The God Talk”

Take time to go over the church announcements and events.
  • The last week of the Fall Semester is December 12.  Plan an end of the year Christmas Party!
  • Winter Session will run from January 16 through March 6, 2011.
  • Spring Session will run from March 27 through May 22, 2011.
  • All participants are encourage to re-register with their current group or a group that works for your schedule.
Opening
Share a life changing conversation you’ve had, preferably a good change.  How did it happen, and how did your life change as a result?

Learn It
Read Matthew 16:13-16.
Who do you say that Jesus was and is?

Romans 10: 9 “...because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Have you ever had “the talk” with God?  If so, how and when?  What changed in your life as a result?

If not, what is holding you back?  What questions do you still have, and would you be willing to talk about them with the group?

Romans 8:14  “For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. 15For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, "Abba! Father!"

3 things that give us assurance:
1. Led by the Holy Spirit
Have you had moments when you felt the Spirit’s presence?  Have you ever felt a “nudge” to say something, call somebody, do something?  If you have not, talk about this, and what you can do to “tune in” to the Spirit.

2. Filled with peace
We have a lot of reasons to be stressed out, pessimistic and full of fear.  Where would you rate yourself on the “Full of Fear/ Full of Peace” scale?  Can someone describe what it’s like to be full of peace when going through hard times?  Read John 14:27 if you need assurance of peace.

3. God is “Abba Father”
Do you want to know God as Father?  Do you know God as Father?  Discuss what it means to have this kind of relational connection with God.

Considering these things, would you say you have the assurance of your salvation?

If not, would you like to have more assurance?  What can you do, according to the bible passages we’ve looked at, to have more assurance?

If you’ve never been baptized, or made a public affirmation of faith, how could that help?

Making it absolutely sure in your heart.
Give group members the chance to have the talk with God.

To learn more about the assurance of our salvation read
2 Peter 1:1-11

How Suffering Works

Connection Group Questions
November 21, 2010

Take time to go over the church announcements and events.
  • The last week of the Fall Semester is December 12. Plan an end of the year Christmas Party!
  • Winter Session will run from January 16 through March 6, 2011.
  • Spring Session will run from March 27 through May 22, 2011.
  • All participants are encourage to re-register with their current group or a group that works for your schedule.
Opening
Ask one or more from the group to share a story of their suffering. What was the source of suffering? How did you handle the suffering? What has the suffering changed in you?

Learn It:
Discuss how many set-up God for a fall with this choice:
God is all good, but not all powerful.
God is all powerful, but not all good.

Does rejecting God eliminate or alleviate our suffering? How, or how not?

Read 1 Peter 4:12-19
Discuss a “Third Way,” as taught in the bible:
God is all good, and all powerful, and we need to understand the reason and role of suffering in the world, while we hold onto the hope of a time when all suffering will be redeemed.

While not all suffering can be explained, we can know the reason why we suffer in the present world. Discuss:
  1. We make bad decisions.
  2. Others make bad decisions.
  3. We live in a broken world.
Discuss this statement from the sermon:
“The bible teaches that God is not the cause of suffering, restrains most suffering, but allows some suffering in our lives for his plans.”

Discuss our Hope in Suffering: Past, Present, Future
God suffers more than we ever could or will by taking our sin to the cross;
by Holy Spirit He stands with us in our present suffering;
in the future all suffering will be redeemed in the resurrection.

Live It:
While few would celebrate or want to relive any serious suffering they have endured, most will say they would not give up the experience (yes, there are many exceptions in extreme cases of suffering and evil). Because of the way suffering shapes and changes us, it is hard to image life with the experience/wisdom gained.
What lessons have you learned from suffering?
Could you say that God allowed the suffering to come into your life for His glory and your good?

Conclusion:
“Christians are like nails- the harder you hit them, the deeper they go.”
When you suffer, how can you go deeper?

Pray for each other.

“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”
~ Romans 8:18

(For more on suffering in the bible read Psalm 23, Job 1, 2 Corinthians 11:22-33, Matthew 5:1-12 and Matthew 27.)

How Sacraments Work

Connection Group Questions
November 14, 2010
“How Sacraments Works”

Take time to go over the church announcements and events.

Opening
Connections Community Church, as one part of the larger Protestant church tradition, upholds two sacraments: Baptism and Communion.  As “sacraments” we believe these to be sacred traditions, revealed to the church through the Scriptures, taught by Jesus Christ, and administered in the church.   While Jesus taught and commanded his followers many things, this much is clear- baptism and communion are to be practiced by the church.  Each sacrament serves as a “sign” and “seal” of an individual as a part of the visible church.  Each carries with it unique spiritual blessings in the life of the believer and the church.

In Baptism the believer and children of believers become participants in the life and ministry of the church.  In the Lord’s Supper, believers and their households are nourished in grace and faith.

Discussion:
What do you believe regarding the sacraments?
Did you grow up in a church that affirmed them, rejected them, or even had more of them (the Catholic Church has 7!)
What does it mean to be, or to make, “sacred”? To be set apart and made pure.
How do the sacraments work?

When they are part of God’s work in us to make us holy and treasured persons, and people.

Baptism:
Connections affirms baptism as the most biblical and faithful public expression of new life in Jesus and participation in the church.  When an adult comes to faith in Jesus and desires to be a part of the church they should seek to be baptized in public worship at the earliest possible convenience.  Connections also affirms the longest standing tradition in the Christian churches of infant baptism.  Baptism is the sign Christ gave us to symbolize the forgiveness and cleansing He accomplishes in the lives of the people who trust and follow Him.  Baptism embodies many layers of meaning: laying down our life, dying to our “old” self, rising in Jesus, washed clean and pure, renewed and ready to follow Jesus the rest of our life.

Discuss the following:
Believer’s baptism- adults who profess repentance and faith in Jesus as Lord, either after a time of preparation, or in immediate response to repentance and belief. (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 8:36-40)
Infant baptism- claiming the promise of faith for a household and the children of Christ-followers. (Matthew 28:18-20, Acts 2:38-41)
Children’s dedication-  As Jesus blessed the children that were brought to him, so we will bless or “dedicate” all children of believers who in good conscious can not embrace infant baptism. (Matthew 19:13-15)
Re-affirmation of the baptismal vows- for all persons who were baptized as infants, or as adults, who wish to publicly profess their faith in Jesus, we will re-affirm the baptismal vows.  This reaffirmation should proceed only after prayerful consideration and in the understand this is not a “re-baptism,” for we believe in “One Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.”  (Ephesians 4:5-6)

Communion, or, The Lord’s Supper
The Lord's Supper was directly instituted by Jesus Christ as a continuing practice for the church during this era before the return of Jesus Christ and the consummation of the Kingdom of God. (Matthew 26:26-29, Mark 14:22-25, Luke 22:19-20 and 1 Corinthians 11:23-25). This has been the universal understanding and practice of Christian churches.

As a Sacrament, the Supper is a sign and seal of the covenant of grace. It is a means by which true believers may spiritually grow and be nourished when received in faith and in the way God has specified in his covenant promises.  By partaking of the elements we come into union with Christ as a united covenant people. For this reason it is often called Communion.

Discuss the following:
Paul carefully instructed the church at Corinth about the right reception of the Lord's Supper in 1 Corinthians 11.  Christians are encouraged to participate, persons who do not openly confess Jesus as savior and Lord should not partake.

Discuss the three things that the sacraments work in our lives:

1.  The sacraments invite us to participate with our lives (a sign and a seal).
2.  The sacraments invite us into a “sacramental worldview.”
3. The sacraments work because of the sacrificial work of God.

The sacraments are meant to unify and empower Christians and the church.  In closing be sure to reaffirm the fact that Baptism and Communion are not things to divide over.  We can have different views on the details, if we are in agreement that we are saved only by God’s grace.

What images, ideas, or memories come to mind when you think about “the church?”

Discuss the definition used for the church: “The people called by God the Father; who gather together as one, holy, catholic and apostolic body under the Lordship of Jesus Christ to be built up and equipped; so they may be sent out in the power of the Holy Spirit, in obedience to the Great Commission (Matt. 28:18-20), to fulfill the Great Commandment (Matt. 22:37-39).

Learn It
The word “church” comes from “ecclesia” which derives from two words, “to be called out” and “to assemble.”   Compare that with some of these bible terms: the body of Christ, the people of God, the family of God, the Elect in Christ, the bride of Christ, the gathering of the redeemed, the communion of saints, the New Israel and the People of the New Covenant.
  • Which one(s) best expresses how you normally think of the church?  How can your understand of the church grow through these other titles?
Read Ephesians 2:18-22
  • Where do you see the trinity in this passage?  What does this tell us about the world?  About our present condition?  About things to come?
  • How can we be better built together as a Group, and as a church?
Read each passage and discuss the three “movements” of church:
  • Calling (Acts 2:37-41)
  • Gathering (Acts 2:42-46)
    •     “one, holy, catholic and apostolic church”
  • Sending (Acts 2:47ff)

Live It
“Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”  1 Corinthians 12:27
  • What part of the body can you play, and how can your part build up the whole church?  (Think about your gifts, the gifts of the Spirit, leadership in the church, etc)
End with a prayer committing ourselves to the calling, gathering and sending necessary for the church to truly work.

  • Sound Board Operator.  If you’re willing, we can train you!
  • Family Ministry- Lead Teacher and Helper positions.  Training date November 7.

What is the Trinity?
“The affirmation that God is a triune being: one in essence, three in persons- God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit.”

Have you ever heard of the doctrine of the Trinity before?
How were you taught about the Trinity as a child (if you grew up in a church), and was it helpful?

2 Corinthians 13:14 “The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”
What does this verse tell us about who God is and how God works?

1. The Trinity works by helping us understand the bible.
“Not antithetical, antimonious!”
Read Genesis 1:12, 26-27.
How does the Trinity help you to understand this passage?

2. The Trinity works by helping us understand our God.
“The Immanent Trinity.”
Read Matthew 3:13-17
Discuss this passage and how it reveals the triune God.
How is this connected to the great commission (Matthew 20:19)?

Three mistakes the Trinity guards us from:
Subordinationism: One God (Father) and two lesser creatures (Son and Holy Spirit)
Modalism: Father, then Son, then Holy Spirit
Tritheism: Three separate gods
Why is it important is it to guard against these teachings?
How does one differ from the doctrine of the trinity as taught by the church?

3. The Trinity works by helping us understand our salvation.
“The Economic Trinity.”
Read 1 John 4:7-14
Discuss this passage, how it helps define the trinity and how it helps us to understand our salvation.

How Worship Works

October 17, 2010
“How Worship Works”

Opening: Discuss...
Q: What is the chief end of humanity?
A: To glorify* God and enjoy Him forever**.
~ Westminster Catechism Q&A 1

* Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.
~ Revelation 4:11
** Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. 4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.
~ Revelation 21:3-4

Learn It: Read Exodus 20:1-6
Martin Luther said that we only break the other commandments after we have broken the first two.  Meaning, if we worship only God, and have no “idols,” we keep all the commandments.  But if we put anything before the worship of we will violate our most fundamental command.

Why is it hard, or not appealing, to try and put God first in everything?
Discuss what “idols” in our world are most tempting for you?

“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” ~ 1 Corinthians 10:31
Ultimately, all of life is to be worship.  Everything should bring Him glory and make us more Christ-like.  What does a life of worship, 24/7/365, look like?  What practical steps can you take to move your life in that direction?

Discuss the following marks of Christian worship...
  1. Christ-centered (1 Corinthians 8:5-6)
  2. Trinitarian (Matthew 28:19)
  3. Communal (Acts 2:44)
  4. Covenantal (Hebrews 9:14-16)
  5. Hospitable (Acts 15:19, Romans 12:13)
  6. Gracious (Romans 8:32)
  7. Biblical (Revelation 1:3)

Live It: Three questions to ask yourself regarding worship...
  1. Do you long to give God glory?  (Do you want to be at worship on Sundays?  Do you want all of your life to feel like worship?  Does all of your life bring God glory?)
  2. Does your faith bring you joy? (Are you more joyful now than you were a year ago?  Are you so joyful that you can’t help but tell others about Jesus?  Do others ask you, “What makes you so joyful and worship-ful?”)
  3. Are you becoming more Christ-like, or more idol-like?  (Looking honestly at your life, understanding that we become like that which we worship, are you becoming more like-Christ?  Or are you becoming more like other things you are pursuing in this world- things like money, food, power, sex...?)

How Grace Works

Series: "howstuffworks.God"
October 10, 2010

Opening
Coming to God’s word is an act of worship. So, after a time of welcome, we encourage you to spend some time in prayer or in singing to start your bible study. Create and atmosphere of praise to start your study on grace.

Learn It
Gordon MacDonald wrote: “You need not be a Christian to build houses, feed the hungry, or heal the sick. There is only one thing the world cannot do. It cannot offer grace.”   Discuss this proposition and the primacy of grace in Christian faith.

Read Ephesians 2:1-10
This passages teaches that we are saved by God’s grace. What does it means to be dead in our sins? Why does the bible teach that we need to be saved? What does is mean to be saved? Do you think most people agree that we need saved? What role does God’s love play in His grace and our lives?

Perhaps the most popular acronym to define it is ”God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense.” Does this help capture what is taught in this passage? What are some of God’s riches? What is the expense that Christ Jesus had to pay for us?

Live it
Do you have any personal stories of experiencing God’s grace?  If so, please share as much as you are comfortable.

Do you have any favorite bible stories that have helped you understand and embrace God’s grace?   If so, please share.

In the message we talked about the difference between you trying to work for God’s grace, and letting God’s grace work for you. Look at the following lists. Examine your life, and assess where you are at in these contrasting positions. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself on both sides. Use this exercise to help you let God work his grace deeper into your heart:

1. Holier than Thou             1. Humble
2. Critical                            2. Encouraging
3. Loathes others                3. Likes others
4. Unforgiving                    4. Eager to forgive
Lonely and Secretive          5. Joyful and Communal
6. Prayers of petition          6. Prayers of adoration
7. Insecure faith                  7. Assurance of salvation

The bible teaches that we are sinners saved by the grace of God.  But also, we are made saints by the grace of God, alive in Christ and filled with the Holy Spirit.  Discuss how holding to the truth of this revelation- we are both sinner and saint- can help us rely more on God’s grace.

Remember: we are saved by grace, and we live by grace! Grace is our regeneration, justification, sanctification and glorification! It’s all about God’s grace!

Leave time to pray for one another!

How Religion Works

October 3, 2010
Series: "howstuffworks.God"
Week 1: “How Religion Works”

Opening
Review the Connection Group Commitment for any new comers. Give attention to the primary purpose of our Groups: “A place to Belong, Grow and Serve.” Make sure folks understand the expectations for the group, and from group participants.

Learn It
Have a few folks share a time when they felt like an outsider.
  • How did that make you feel, and what could they have done to make you feel welcomed?
Read Acts 15:1-11, 19-21.
Verses 1-11 of Acts 15 describes an early disagreement among the early church about whether or not Gentiles should be allowed to into the church. Some of the church leaders viewed them as outsiders and should be treated as such. In verses 11 and 19, Peter stands up and declares that the church should not exclude the Gentiles and the church “should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.” (v.19)
  • Describe a time when you felt like an outsider at a church. How did that experience affect your attitude towards the church?
  • Why do you think it is easy for churches to forget that church is for everyone not just for “church people”?
One of the primary reasons we make others feel like outsiders is because we are too comfortable in our current surroundings. We must get out of our comfort zone. Share a time when you jumped out of your comfort zone to do something God was leading you to do.
  • How did your stepping out of your comfort zone help you grow as a person and in your faith?
  • What changes in our mindset can each of us make Connections be more welcoming?
  • What are some of the ways Connections successfully creates an environment that is welcoming?
  • Who would you like to see find a place in our church? What would it take for them to be comfortable at church? Ask someone to join you and pray for them.
Live It
Next Sunday take some steps in helping make our worship service more inviting. Here are a few suggestions of things you can do:
  • Don’t rush out of the church after your worship experience. Spend some time in the lobby visiting with those you do not know and especially those who are visitors.
  • Before, during and after your worship experience, keep an eye out for someone who looks lost or could use some help. Step out of your comfort zone and do what you can to assist them.
  • Consider serving in an area of ministry that is instrumental in creating a welcoming atmosphere for everyone, like our children’s ministry or greeting.
Each of us can do our part to insure that our church does not make anyone who walks through the doors feel like an outsider. Pray and ask God to help you jump out of your comfort zone and step up your efforts in making your church a welcoming place for everyone.  And, keep the conversation going this week with your family, group and online on our Facebook Fan Page.

In the Hood, Week 4

For Groups meeting the week of September 26

Opening
Feel free to spend the bulk of your first gathering meeting one another. To begin, you could put people into pairs, give them a moment to talk, then take turns introducing the other person to the group. After introductions go over the “Connection Group Commitment.” Address any questions and go over childcare needs if applicable. Send around a snack sign up too!

Digging In
If you have time get right into our series, “In The Hood.” How has your faith grown or been challenged this month?

Week 1: Are you living your faith the other 167 hours of the week? How, or how not? Are you on board with the Great
Commandment (Mark 12:29-3) and the Great Commission, (Matthew 28:18-20)?

Week 2: Read Romans 12:3-21. Have you been living in “Pseudo Community” with anyone? Did you work to create any “Sincere Community” by venturing down “the Tunnel of Chaos?” Have you worked to practice hospitality?
Did you share with the saints in need?
These are the marks of genuine faith. They are not optional for the Christ-follower. How can you grown in these areas?

Week 3: Discuss the video and let us know what you thought. Would you be interested in more video teaching at Connections?

Week 4: Read Hebrews 10:19-25. Review the three spiritual blessings that we have in Jesus:
v. 22, “Let us draw near…
v. 23, Let us hold fast…
v. 24-25, “Let us stir one another to love and good works…”
One concrete way to apply this passage is to continue meeting together. So what you are doing in your Group is practicing biblically faith! How can your group be an encouragement to one another to love and do good works?

Closing
Prayer is to be an essential part of the Group experience. We encourage your group to keep a Prayer Journal to share requests and celebrate answers! Your group leader will pray for you, but everyone is welcome to participate!

Fall 2010 Catalog

Hi folks,

We hope you'll find the new Connection Groups blog format easy to navigate.
You'll find four tabs across the top.
  • The Home page (here) will have each week's discussion guide and announcements.
  • The Locations page has our current catalog of groups meeting this Fall, 2010.
  • The FAQs page is just that, FAQs
  • The Group Commitment page outlines the expectations for participants.
Group Leaders Training will be held @ 19 Ardsley Road, Saturday, September 18 from 10am-12pm.

As we get ready to start groups on Sunday, September 26, here are some questions to consider from this past Sunday's message (September 5):

Questions to consider as we go “Into the Hood”
  • Are you trying to live out your faith 168 hours of the week?  How, or why not?
  • How can you improve in living out the Great Commandment?  In what areas are you not showing love for God, neighbor and/or self?
  • Does the Great Commission define the mission of your life?
  • Does the vision of Connections (Connecting with God...People... the World) make sense and make you want to be involved in each essential area of our ministry (worship, home groups and volunteering)?
  • How can our church get from here (worship) to there (the hood) better than we are right now?  Or, how can our church get from here (the way things are) to there (the way want them to be)?
  • Do you personally feel awake, equipped and fully nourished, as enacted in the Lord’s Supper?  If not, what needs to happen in your life this Fall?

Summer Vacation 2010

Connection Groups run on a semester format: Fall, Winter and Spring.
Our Groups break from "formal" meetings for July and August.

If you are interested in joining a group we'll be starting up again in September 2010.
Until then we do have many "informal" gatherings, events and Volunteer Teams that run all year long.

So join us in worship at the Silver City Movie Theatre 10am every Sunday, and speak with one of our leaders.
Or check out connectionschurch.ca for current events and announcements.

Is Heaven For Real?

May 23, 2010

Review: Hell matters because…
1. God will do something about Satan and sin.
2. Jesus wants us to know the truth.
3. Our choices, and our life on earth, matters.

Discuss why/how the reality of hell should inspire outreach and evangelism.

Bible Readings: 1 Corinthians 15:50-58 and Revelation 4
What do these passages teach us about the afterlife, and in particular heaven? (Feel free to really work these passages over!)

Review: What will NOT be in heaven…

Review: What WILL be in heaven…

Heaven matters because:
It is our hope for the future and our purpose for the present.

Discuss the crowns we might receive in heaven:
The Imperishable or Incorruptible Crown (1 Cor. 9:25-27)

The Crown of Righteousness (2 Tim. 4:8)

The Crown of Rejoicing (1 Thes. 2:19-20)

The Crown of Glory (1 Peter 5:4)

The Crown of Life (James 1:12, Rev. 2:10)

The Hope of Heaven:
We will be HOME.

We will be KNOWN.

We will be FOREVER.

We will worship God FACE TO FACE.

The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD lift his countenance upon you and give you peace.
~ Numbers 6:24-26

Is Hell For Real?

Series: SO You're Dead...Now What?"
May 16, 2010

Opening:
If you were to bring up the subject of “hell” to friends or co-workers who are not Christ followers, what kinds of reactions might you experience?
What do you imagine heaven and hell will be like?

From what Jesus says, hell is very real and something to be avoided at all costs. So, why is it difficult for many of us to talk about hell?

Read Luke 16:19-31

Explore:
How did Jesus describe the rich man in the story? (16:19)
What does the story tell us about Lazarus? (16:20)
What role did angels play in this story? (16:22)
Where did the angels take Lazarus? (16:22)
What difference did the rich man's wealth make in his eternal destiny? (16:22-23)
What does this parable reveal about heaven and hell? (16:22-31)
What did the rich man see from his place in hell? (16:23)
How did Abraham respond to the request of the rich man? (16:25)
Why did the rich man want Lazarus to go to his father's house on earth? (16:27-28)
What did the rich man think was necessary to convince his brothers to believe? (16:30)

Reflect:
How does this story affect your understanding of the afterlife?
What have you learned from this parable about the eternal value of material possessions?
What things do you think have eternal value?

Discuss:
In the message we explored why hell exists; what hell is like; and who is in hell.
Why doesn’t Satan want you to take hell seriously?
Why does Jesus want you to take hell seriously?
What difference does a biblical understanding of hell make in the life of the Christ follower?

Apply:
In the next few days, how can you demonstrate your thankfulness to the Lord for His provision of eternal life?

How many people like Lazarus do you know who could benefit from your compassion today?

What Happens When We Die?

Series: So You're Dead...Now What?
“What Happens When We Die?”
May 9, 2010

Opening: Share a memory of a funeral or a recent death that affected you personally.

Read Ecc 7: 4 "The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of mirth."

• Death is part of life. Why is it so hard for us to talk about it?

Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him. Hebrews 9:27-28

Discuss the following points from the message using the chart provided in your bulletin.

1) PHYSICAL DEATH IS INEVITABLE
2) THE SOUL IS ETERNAL
3) JUDGMENT IS IMMANENT

• THE GREAT WHITE THRONE
Revelation 20:11-12, 15

• THE JUDGMENT SEAT OF CHRIST
2 Corinthians 5:10

Read Matthew 25:31-46
Discuss this story

1) How does your belief about eternity affect the way you live today?

(A person’s) work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man's work. If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames. 1 Corinthians 3:13-15

2) If you died today and stood at the judgment seat of Christ, when your works and motives are revealed, would you feel good about your life? Why or why not?

3) Since you still have an opportunity to change, what is God showing you to do differently?

WHAT YOU BELIEVE ABOUT DEATH AND ETERNITY WILL DETERMINE HOW YOU LIVE.

God is Green- So What?

May 2, 2010

Opening: Read Psalm 104 and open with prayer- give thanks for God’s creation.

Review:
That God is green give us REASON…
That we are stewards gives us a ROLE…
That the future is green gives us HOPE…

Green is a virtue that: HONORS God, embraces STEWARDSHIP and considers the FUTURE.

Discuss the following:
1. How do we balance the priorities of the Christian life (worship, fellowship, discipleship, evangelism, mission and now stewardship)?

2. How can we use environmental concerns as an opportunity to connect evangelistically with other people?
• Mark 12:30-31
• Micah 6:8

3. What is the one thing you would recommend that all of us need to do/change in order to be more green?
• Genesis 2:2-3

Review/Discuss Pascals Wager and the Green Wager…

Decision: What are you going to change or do as a result of this series and the bible’s teaching? It may be one thing, or several things. The challenge is to put a green ethic into practice immediately.

Closing: Pray for one another and for our series starting May 9, “So You’re Dead…Now What?”

The Future's So Green I Gotta Wear Shades

Review: Define Stewardship...
1. We are IMAGE BEARERS…
2. We exercise RULE or DOMINION...

What makes us CONNECTED to the earth…

Read 2 Peter 3:1-13
Feel free to discuss this passage. Then focus on this section:
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

Why does eschatology (future times) matter?
What are some of the competing/conflicting views of future events among Christians?
What is the difference between the earth being destroyed, and the earth being exposed?

Does the promise of a new heaven and a new earth mean that “anything goes” on this earth? Why or why not?

Read Romans 8:19-22
What makes the creation “groan?”
Why is it significant that creation is being born?
Why does the creation long for the children of God?

Read Revelation 21:1-5
Discuss what this clearly teaches regarding the future of heaven and earth.

Discuss what is promised in the future and how each of these promises relates to a “green” God and the Stewardship mandate:

1. Jesus will __________.

2. The church should be __________.

3. Those who have turned from Jesus will be __________ by their works.

4. Those who have turned to Jesus will be __________ for their works.

5. We will be free from __________ and __________.

6. Heaven and Earth will be ____________________.

7. God’s dwelling will be __________________.

What questions would you like to hear addressed in our final message of the “God is Green” series?

You're Green Too

Sunday, April 18, 2010
Review: The reason for this series...
Remember:
God __________ creation;
God __________ creation;
God __________ creation.

You need to __________ in order to __________ in order to _________.

Read Genesis 1:26-2:7
Define Stewardship...

Discuss that which makes us UNIQUE:
1. We are IMAGE BEARERS…

2. We exercise RULE or DOMINION...

This is often called our “Cultural Mandate.” Discuss what it really means to live as stewards of the earth…
Discuss what makes us CONNECTED:
1. We were made on the sixth day.
2. We were made from the dust of the ground (“Adam” from the “Adamah.”)
3. We were made to live on the earth.

What are some of the implications of these connections?

Look at Genesis 2:15. What light does this shed on the earth care mandate and the cultural mandate?

Discuss the significance of naming. Naming infers this idea of knowing, caring and acting on behalf of something or someone.

Spend some time “naming” some of the current issues in earth care:
• Population Increase:
• Hunger:
• Species Extinction:
• Water Conservation/Contamination:
• Deforestation:
• Desertification:
• Waste Management:
• Energy Consumption:
• Air Quality:
• Climate Change:

Don’t forget to review church news, discuss any questions group members have about Connections, and share prayer requests.

Consider making plans to organize an “Earth Day” project of your own, or plan a movie night to watch a current documentary like “Food Inc.” or the BBC series, “Planet Earth” or “Blue Earth.” Consider tuning in to the blessedearth.org online simulcast on Wednesday, April 21 at 7:30pm. Register in advance online.

God was Green before Green was

Series: God is Green
MESSAGE: “God was Green before Green was”
April 11, 2010

What was the # 2 reason for this series?

The #1 reason for this series?

Do you think we have to potential to make a tremendous impact in our culture through embracing a "green" theology?

In your own words discuss what you think to be the predicament and the potential of our current status in culture.
___
The Predicament: Misinterpretations of the bible occur primarily in three areas:
• Why God created (Genesis 1)…
• What role we play (Genesis 2)…
• Where all this is going (Revelation 21-22)...

Have encountered any churches or teachings that state the world is 'going to hell" and Christians shouldn't care?
Is there any merit to this view?

Why does this view seem attractive to some people?

Read Genesis 1:1-3
God is the cause of creation. God orders the creation. God affirms the creation.

Review each day (Genesis 1:4-31) and how God causes, orders and affirms the creation…

Day 1:

Day 2:

Day 3:

Day 5:

Day 6:

Day 7:

The creation story raises a lot of questions. Feel free to discuss some of those…

The creation story also answers a lot of questions. What does this story tell us clearly about God (who is God, how does God work, why did God create...)?

Come up with a definition for “green” as a group...

Rooted in Christ

BELONG
Next week is Spring Break. We encourage groups to take a break, at least from your “formal” meeting, and then start up again for Holy Week. We don’t take for granted that all group members will re-register. Your group leader(s) will want to confirm your decision asap.

GROW
Discuss the diagram that George went over in the worship service.
• What are your thoughts on the mission (“Connecting with God…People…the World.”)?
• What about our three core programs (Worship, Groups and Ministry Teams)?
• What about the surrounding practices (Daily Office, 3 Relationships, Servant Evangelism)?
Are you committed to this mission, programs and practices? Why or why not? (There are no wrong answers- you’re just discussing where you’re at in the journey.)

Out of a life centered on Jesus flows thankfulness (Colossians 2:6-7). Discuss the three disciplines that thankful people demonstrate discussed in the service:

Give- “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:7
Share- “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures…” 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
Grow- “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen.” 2 Peter 3:18

REACH OUT
Did your leader sign up your group to collect donations for the London Food Bank? If so, make your schedule!

Obey

February 21, 2010

BELONG
Catch up, go over announcements, pray.

GROW
Read Mark 12: 28
One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"
29"The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.' 31The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no commandment greater than these."

(You can also read this story in Matthew 22:34-40, and for an added twist read Luke 10:25-37.)

A few years back a saying was made popular in the church- “What Would Jesus Do?”
One of the things we can be sure that Jesus DID was to recite the “Shema” (Hebrew for “hear”) every morning and evening, as this was the custom of all Jews.

Read the Shema in Deuteronomy 6:1-9.
What does the introduction (v. 1-3) teach us? Why is this material important? Discuss what it means to teach, to fear and to obey these commands.

How does the second part (v. 4-9) add to our understanding? How literally do you think we should take these instructions?

Read Leviticus 19:18.
This is the other quote from Jesus. Taken together, Jesus says this two-fold command captures the whole of the law/commands.

Let’s start with setting our reference point: what is love? How do we experience, understand, and share love? (Don’t feel the need to come up with a definition, as this is a discussion.)

First, What does it mean, or what difference would it make, for you to start loving yourself as God loves you? How might you view yourself differently? How would you treat yourself differently? What changes can you make to better love yourself, as God loves you?

Second, now apply all this to your neighbors. First, who are your neighbors? What are their names? How can you actually love them? (Again- discussion, and sharing stories, is the most helpful way to grasp and apply this command.)

Third, now about loving God. How have you experienced the love of God? How do you express your love for God with your heart, soul, mind and strength? How can you better show your love for God with all your being?

Scott McKnight calls this “The Jesus Creed” and commends the discipline of reciting this “creed’ at the beginning and end of every day, and as many times in between as we are reminded. Pray for one another to live the Jesus Creed.

Follow

February 14, 2010

BELONG
Open with a game or prayer. Review the church announcements and allow time for “catching up.”

GROW
Read Matthew 4:18-22.
Discuss the three points made about this passage in the message:

First, one must hear the invitation of Jesus to follow. Discuss what it means to follow Jesus. Are you willing to make the first step and simply follow Jesus?
(Perhaps a few people in the group can share their story of answering the invitation to follow- what was it like to start following Jesus? What changes occurred in your life? Was it all good, or difficult to get started? Don’t be surprised if your stories are all very different.)

Second, following Jesus always means leaving something behind. Discuss what you left behind to follow Jesus, or what Jesus is asking you to leave behind to follow him more closely?

Third, Jesus gives only one incentive to follow him- the promise that he will make his followers “fishers of men.” What does it mean to be a fisher of men/women? Do you even want to become a fisher- why or why not? What does it look like to make a catch?

REACH
One very real way we can apply this passage to our lives is to begin seeing ourselves as fishers of men and women. In this exercise you will actually map out your “fishing pond.” Draw your street and the houses around your home. Fill in as many names of households as you can.

Your job, as a “fisher,” is to fill in the blanks by getting to know your neighbors, finding ways to care for them, and looking for opportunities to share God’s love with them. Commit to pray for and reach out to your neighbors.

I Believe...Help my Unbelief

BELONG
Begin tonight with a time of prayer. Invite anyone who is comfortable join in and say a prayer.

GROW
Tonight will be a little different. Instead of a straightforward “bible study” we’ll be do a “creed study.” To begin, share if you have any familiarity with the creed, or if this to totally new. Either way, we are starting with the basics tonight. If someone in your group is knowledgeable about the creed, feel free to give a little background lesson.

The Apostle’s Creed, from the Book of Common Prayer
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic* Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.

(* “catholic” does not refer to the denomination, Catholic, but to the “universal” or “Christian” church.)

While the creed is not in the bible, is has been used by Christians since roughly the late second century. The version used here is what was settled upon about the year 750. This basic form of the Creed is embraced by Orthodox, Catholic and most Protestant churches.

• Do you find think the antiquity of the creed makes it all the more acceptable, or irrelevant?
• What are some of the possible benefits, and possible problems, of using the Creed?
• In your own words share how the creed might help to DEFINE your belief…
• DEFEND your belief…
• DIRECT your belief…

There is too much in the Creed to do a bible study of each and every proposition. But, if there is time, you can discuss any points which you find particularly helpful, or particularly troublesome in the Creed.

The challenge in the worship service was to embrace Martin Luther’s advice and repeat the Creed 8 times every day. Will you take the challenge?

REACH
Next Sunday we will look at the first step of belief in the life of the disciples of Jesus- the step to simply follow.

YOU 2.0- Why You Can't be YOU 2.0

BELONG
Open tonight with a game of some sort. Trivial Pursuit, Pictionary- something that gets everyone involved. It is a good way for people to get used to talking and sharing in a group setting.

Optional Fun question: If you had to live alone for a year in a cabin in the woods, what would you spend your time doing?

If someone can lead in singing, and if the group desires, open with a song or two. Take time at the start of the meeting to go over the church announcements and upcoming events. Don’t forget to plan a fun event, and maybe a service event for your group. Please talk about the importance of Connection Cards for our ministry.

GROW
The sermon opened with the question - what words would you use to describe your walk with God? Would anyone mind sharing what they answered?

Read Romans 7:15, 21-23
  • Have you ever felt like Paul did in this chapter? What were the circumstances?
  • Why is it that we struggle so much to follow God?
  • Do you ever feel like David did (Psalm 40) that you are somehow bent towards doing wrong? Would anyone mind sharing what that is like for them?

Read Galatians 5:16-25
  • If someone asked you, ‘who is the Holy Spirit’, what would you say? Reference passages: Matt 28:18-20, John 14:16,25; John 16:7-15
  • What do you think it means to walk in step with the Spirit?
  • What is the difference between the fruit (singular) of the spirit, instead of the fruits of the Spirit? Why is the distinction important?
  • Ben talked about the fruit the Spirit and the counterfeit of each - how have you struggled against the counterfeits in your life? Are there any in particular that you struggle with?
  • What does it look like practically to crucify the flesh with its passions and desires?
  • How do you see this teaching on the Holy Spirit impacting your life? (Does anything need to change in your life after understanding this?)

REACH OUT
Close in a time of prayer with one another. Challenge one another other to pray for 2 people you might invite to a worship service, the Connection Group, or a service event this February.

YOU 2.0: Spiritual Suffering

BELONG
After everyone has had a chance to grab a snack or drink, briefly review the purpose of our Groups using the “Group Commitment.” Are there any questions? Did you make plans yet for a “play time?” May we suggest a Superbowl party or an evening of ice-skating at Victoria Park? Start a sign up sheet for sharing snacks and contact information.

At this time your facilitators we go over our church announcements and explain the purpose of our Connection Cards. You may be surprised to find out why it is so important that our regulars fill out a Card every week!

GROW
If anyone in the group has the gift of leading worship, and if the group wants to, we encourage you to start this time with a song or two. This can be the perfect way to bless the group and grow someone’s gift.

After an opening prayer jump right into our discussion with this conversation: Please share, to the degree that you are comfortable, a time in your life when you “crashed” or experienced great suffering. This could be an experience in your past, or something you are currently navigating. Would you go so far as to call this experience, “A dark night of the soul?”

Review some of the different kinds ways we might suffer:
Through disobedience, bad choices, the choices of others, or just the pain of a broken world. Have you experienced suffering in any or all of these ways?

Read 1 Peter 4: 12-16
Dear friends, do not be surprised at the painful trial you are suffering, as though something strange were happening to you. 13But rejoice that you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 14If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name.

Now talk about suffering as part of God’s plan for your life.
  • Do you feel you’ve ever suffered for being a Christian?
  • How has God has used your suffering for your own growth?
  • How has God used your suffering as a ministry to others?
  • How might God use your suffering if you are still in the midst of the pain?

Can you really rejoice as you suffer? If someone is in the midst of suffering be very sensitive to their needs, and what God is doing in their life. This is an emotional topic. Do not feel the need to bring closure to the questions raised in this study. Invite God to meet you in your suffering, and to use that suffering for the saving of many lives (Genesis 50:20).

For further study: read Romans 5:1-11; review of the life of Joseph, Genesis 37-50; or review on the experience of Job.

REACH
Pray for one another and how you or your group might reach out to those who suffer.

You 2.9: It's You, Only Youier

The majority of your first meeting of the winter semester will be spent getting to know what Connection Groups are all about, and all about each other! Your facilitators will walk you through our three major movements of each gathering:
Belong- Grow- Reach

Following some time introducing one another, you will review the Connection Group Commitment (attached below on the blog). This will clarify what you can expect from your group, and what the group can expect from you.

If this takes the whole meeting, that’s fine. Just make sure to take time at the end to pray with one another, makes arrangements for childcare, start a “snack sign-up,” and make plans for a group “social” and a group “service” event.
____

If you have time, or want to get a “preview “ of a normal group meeting, here’s a bible study:
Read Ephesians 1:1-14

1Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God,
To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus:
2Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
3Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will— 6to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves. 7In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace 8that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. 9And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, 10to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.
11In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, 12in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory. 13And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession—to the praise of his glory.

Circle the words “in Christ” and “in Him” in this passage.
Discuss what it means to put one’s life in Jesus-
Why does this seem so important to the writer?
How do you put your life in Jesus?
What difference does it make? List all the spiritual blessing of life “in Him.”
Feel free to focus on one or two blessings that really stand out.

How does life in Jesus make you the you that God intended “before the creation of the world”?
